After seeing this raging pile of steaming nonsense:
TMP link
I was reminded of a poster that said:
"Arguing on the Internet is like running in the Special Olympics. Even if you win you're still Special."

I mean c'mon guys, there's no point in arguing with someone with equally strongly held opinions. No one is going to convince anyone else they're wrong or right or whatever. It's like arguing with the bible thumpers when they come door to door; a no win situation.

It's like arguing with the bible thumpers when they come door to door; a no win situation.

I actually kind of enjoy this activity.

"Arguing on the Internet is like running in the Special Olympics. Even if you win you're still Special."

I'm gonna make that my quote of the day!

Don't bother reading that stuff. Takes away from painting and rolling dice!

Actually there is a benefit from debating an issue with a knowledgeable opponent with strongly held opinions. It provides you with insight into the evidence and arguments that the other side is using. It allows you a forum to test, refine and develop your own arguments in support of your position and counter arguments to your opponents.

Besides the real purpose of a debate is not to win over your opponent it is to win over the audience. Lincoln was not trying win over Douglas, he was trying to win the votes of the crowd that came to listen.

I saw the topic when it first started – and read through it a few hours later – and when it devolved into things bordering on the Blue Fez – I dropped it.

raylev306 Mar 2009 1:01 p.m. PST

A fool will not listen, and a wise man will not allow himself to get wrapped up in that kind of bull crap thread.

Lentulus06 Mar 2009 1:24 p.m. PST

To quote a local beer add,"Those who like it, like it a lot"

At least I presume they do. Otherwise, they are wasting a great deal of time.

Yet apparently you start a thread to try to convince people that you are right. Do you not see a contradiction?

If people can't be reasoned with, why start a thread?

If people can be reasoned with, the basis of this thread is incorrect.

In reality people, even with strong convictions, do change their minds. However, it does not usually happen quickly.

I like slugging it out on internet it's a great way to let go of some stream that was one of the reasons I loved the CA board but alas the fear was too great for most and the board went away. I say slug it out, so what if name calling goes on or what ever it's the internet nobody gets hurt and if you don't like it stop reading it's pretty simple. Deleted by Moderator

How many times do you have to be told that the CA board you pine for so much is now the Blue Fez? Have you found it yet and jined up, or would you rather complain?

Don't you have to be a supporting member to be part of Blue Fez?

Personal logo John the OFM Supporting Member of TMP06 Mar 2009 1:42 p.m. PST

It has nothing to do with TMP, except Bill runs both. No supporting membership, as far as I know.

aecurtis Fezian06 Mar 2009 1:44 p.m. PST

I came here for a good argument.

Jamesonsafari06 Mar 2009 1:44 p.m. PST

Derval: thanks first good laugh of the day.

hurcheon06 Mar 2009 1:54 p.m. PST

No, you can be a basic membership and enjoy Fez benefits. At the moment it seems like a bit of a sounding board for only one side of most arguments, but it is there

Allen;

No you didn't!

My favorite quote: "A million monkeys typing on a million typewriters would eventually write a Shakespeare play. The Internet has disproved that theory."

GildasFacit Sponsoring Member of TMP06 Mar 2009 2:25 p.m. PST

That thread was neither a discussion nor an argument and it certainly didn't have much reason in it. It seemed mostly a vehicle for a few posters to pile insults on others who did not read the same WW2 comic books they got their information from.

aecurtis Fezian06 Mar 2009 2:48 p.m. PST

That, and taking the opportunity to behave very badly, apparently thinking that Nanny has fallen down the stairs and won't get up.

Allen

GoodBye06 Mar 2009 2:57 p.m. PST

It might have been a drive by tussle by the old CA gang.

Honcho06 Mar 2009 2:58 p.m. PST

Oi! That's my favorite quote. Put it down and walk away.

Earl of the North06 Mar 2009 3:37 p.m. PST

Just email Bill and your in the Blue Fez, Irish Marine.

We could however do with a few more left wing guys in the Blue Fez then we have at the moment……..we have had a couple of our resident lefties storm off in a huff so were a little short at the moment.

Neotacha06 Mar 2009 4:33 p.m. PST

Just skimmed a page or two of that thread. Ouch! Should have been a mass dawghousing from those posts. Some very badly behaved folks on what apparently wasn't meant to be a serious thread in the first place.

aecurtis Fezian06 Mar 2009 5:02 p.m. PST

I think the DH must be closed for renovations.

"We could however do with a few more left wing guys in the Blue Fez…"

Good luck with that. It ain't the CA board, so I'm not interested. Besides, Deleted by Moderator is like what they say about wrestling a pig.

Besides, Deleted by Moderator is like what they say about wrestling a pig.

Ooh, ooh, I know this one!

"Perhaps the pig will learn to sing."

Has anyone ever TRIED to put lipstick on a pig?

Errrr, not that I have, mind you. I'm just asking.

Personal logo McKinstry Supporting Member of TMP Fezian06 Mar 2009 10:02 p.m. PST

"Perhaps the pig will learn to sing."

I've always heard it as you both get muddy and the pig just likes it.

GarrisonMiniatures07 Mar 2009 3:28 a.m. PST

Nothing wrong with a good argument, even if they do go on a bit.

The bad ones can be a bit of a pain.

carne6807 Mar 2009 9:13 a.m. PST

I give you Arguing on the Internet…

Daffy Doug08 Mar 2009 3:16 p.m. PST

I contend, that the Net has brought more arguing into the open, because of the safety on anonimity. But if anyone thinks that their arguing skills on the Net somehow equate with their empirical presence, then THAT is a problem, not arguing on the Net per se. Too many denizens of Cyberspace desperately want to be as tough as they make themselves "sound" on forums.

Scutatus08 Mar 2009 3:37 p.m. PST

I realised I had gone too far which is why I apologised and backed out of it.

I'm sorry for my part in it.

What about threatening to do some one physical harm? Or threatening to use one's position as a law enforcement officer to find them? I'm sure that sort of behavior is acceptable because it is just on the Internet after all.
