I was looking for some information on the tail markings of US Naval planes around the time of the Battle of the Philippine Sea. I believe a lot of US carriers at the time had specific markings for their planes.

Any online soucre would be great thanks.

Markings make no difference on your planes JD….because all the smoke and flames pouring out of your planes after I shoot them down mask the markings! Ha HA Ha LoL!!!!

On a serious side,

JD and the Battle Barn are working on a "Marainas Turkey Shoot" scenario for WBiM to be played at Fall-In 09. Answers to his USN marking question will help us prepare…

If you can check out Osprey Aircraft of the Aces series. Loads of colour profiles in these but yes your right, different squadrons had particular markings often on the tail.

Hellcats for example had white: stripes, circles, checkers, triangles etc

Signal Squadron publishes a book called US Navy Aircraft Markings, 1940-1945. It will have all you need in there.
