Check Youtube for a series on a home-made game entitled Raum Krieg. It is based on the idea that the Nazis had developed what amounts to hovercraft and UFO's; too late to stave off defeat, so the remnants fled to Antarctica. They have decided the time has come (near future)to settle accounts. The "aircraft" (actually saucers and such) are made from common household and Doller Store bits, with WWII aircraft decals. The rules are simple (and appear to be fun).

The author has done many other video's, including reviews of tabletop games, and a series on army men gaming (as mentioned in another thread). Well worth watching!

Is the game still based on a grid?

cloudcaptain24 Feb 2009 12:38 p.m. PST

Awesome…will post this on the Combat Storm yahoo group. Thanks for the heads up!

Jakar--

Yes, it uses a grid. It shouldn't be hard to convert the game to inches, though.

Saw this post and went to watch the videos. Too cool.
I have to have an evil axis saucer space fleet!!!

cloudcaptain25 Feb 2009 10:37 p.m. PST

Crap…he condones recasting in part 4 of his casting video.

Lions Den26 Feb 2009 7:07 a.m. PST

Naw, he says that upfront in pt 1. He is recasting the Titanium Range of metal minis space ships.

cloudcaptain26 Feb 2009 11:14 a.m. PST

Ah…I skipped ahead to the good stuff to see if the previous stuff was worth going over :)

The Lost Soul27 Feb 2009 10:31 a.m. PST

I must have missed the recasting remarks. I reviewed Pt 1 and Pt 4--all I saw were his summary of the rules, special cards, etc. Where is it?

Lions Den02 Mar 2009 1:14 p.m. PST

Totally differnet topic in his collection of videos.
He has a series on homecasting minis.
Basically bootlegging copyright miniatures.

I can't tell if he even knows this is wrong.

Having reviewed the Raum Krieg videos, my son (12) and I are going to try it. Being someone never willing to leave well enough alone, however, I couldn't resist doing some research on-line to get names, locations, pictures, etc.

Oh my.

Searching for "Nazi UFO" on Youtube brought up quite a bit of stuff, mostly duplicative or derivative. It generally consists of "artists' conceptions"--always a solid source of historical fact--and/or a series of incredibly blurry or grainy photographs, which seems odd, given German technical expertise in photography. A word of warning if you decide to view some of this: the responses appears to be primarily from neo-Nazis and SS Fanboys.

Googling "Neuschwabenland" (Germany's name for their Antarctic territory) brought up a TON of stuff, some of it more useful. Again, much of it was from extremely nasty elements (e.g. the neo-Nazi "Storm Front") which I avoided, and some was from the fringier of the fringe, which described Nazi alliances with space aliens and reptile-men who live beneath the surface. (Hey, I said they were fringy.) On the other hand, some of the stuff was more down to earth: my favorite is from a guy who systematically demolishes every aspect of the Nazi-Antarctic mythology, ending tongue-in-cheek with a second-hand account he found from an alleged survivor of a British unit sent to wreck the Nazi's base. The supposed veteran told a lurid story, which included melees with furry "Polar Men". As the demolisher points out, great: Nazis and Yeti. Can giant squids be far behind?

And what's really bizarre is somebody out there reading this is already thinking about where to get Yeti and squid figures to turn all this into a game. At least Raum Krieg stuck to flying saucers!

With the author's permission, I've written up a text version of Raum Krieg, which includes Unit and Special Weapons cards, more aircraft designations, Unit identifications, etc. No pictures, though--don't know how to do it.

I don't have a website, but will send a copy to anyone interested. Contact me at chris.johnson@ssa.gov
