Well time travels fast and the Australian Napoleonic congress is back again in 2009. The dates are October Sat 31st & Sunday 1st November, this year we are returning to the original format with guest lecturers, wargaming , re-enactors and a dinner which is co- hosted by the Goulburn Pipes and Drums.

The committee of the Australian Napoleonic Congress will be meeting in the coming weeks to flesh out the details and come up with a short list of guest speakers to be approached. Invites to clubs and individuals will be sent out to the wargaming and the re-enactors who have already shown interest in the bi-annual event. The consulates of all of the major and minor players will be invited to the dinner along with the local dignitaries.

As normal the event will be conducted in Goulburn NSW Australia, at the Goulburn Soldiers Club in the Chisholm and the lecture rooms.

At this early stage we would welcome anybody who wishes to conduct a lecture to contact me, we are planning to pay the lecturer a speaking fee and provide refreshments for them. The lectures are planned for forty minutes in length, with five lectures per day.

We are also seeking quality Napoleonic games to grace the event as in the past the Goulburn Wargames club will conduct three games, one Grand game (General de Brigade), one skirmish game and one naval game, I suspect a number of the games will revolve around the 200th anniversary's of the 1809 campaigns.

This year the Goulburn Tourist Information centre will be helping with advertising and ticket sales for the dinner and lectures. We plan to advertise on all general media and some targeted media.

Further Information will be available after the 20th of March 2009

Our Goal is to achieve a well rounded event that will satisfy all Napoleonic enthusiasts, I hope to see you all there!

Cheers
matt

Hi Matt,

The Fighting Third Division with Cav support (1811) will be there and I can bring down what ever Spanish buildings/villages you need as well.

Cheers Adam

French Wargame Holidays21 Feb 2009 3:33 p.m. PST

Adam,

I will email you with orbats etc in the coming weeks, could you send me a list of your troops and types and buildings you have so I can slot you in.

Arteis21 Feb 2009 9:09 p.m. PST

I would have loved to come from New Zealand and put on a display game (it would have given me a deadline to get my A into G to learn 'Sharp Practice' and prepare a scenario). But I can't figure out an way of transporting my figures and scenery over the Tasman … a method that is affordable, anyway – I can't afford those purpose-built carrying cases for that many troops.

Still, might be worth considering attending, just for the fun of it …

French Wargame Holidays22 Feb 2009 2:45 a.m. PST

Arteis,

what are you after? buildings and trees can be supplied along with terrain tiles, let me know if you ned them.

cheers
Matt

Cardinal Hawkwood22 Feb 2009 2:54 a.m. PST

Sounds interesting. Keep us posted as the details firm up please.

Phillipaj24 Feb 2009 4:54 p.m. PST

Matt- I've about four 6'x4' MDF boards that you can have for keeps, plus decent quality several mdf painted and flocked hills of various sizes, plus roads and river and wood bases/sections- all gratis if you want them for the Congress and all things related.

They are just gathering dust in my garage so they should go to a worthy cause.

All you need is for someone to arrange to collect them from me in Canberra at some point.

Cheers

Phillip

I can be there with a few divisions of British and a few regiments of French as well and look forward to winning another bottle of Glen Fiddich. So you need more French than British by the sounds of it. If you get your A into G we could have La Haye or Hougamont finished by then.

Mandelsons again old boy…..Tally ho

French Wargame Holidays02 Mar 2009 3:45 a.m. PST

Yes A into G would be a great idea,

la Haye or Hougamont only need to do the buildings, the terrain tiles and the troops!

Yadamisha02 Mar 2009 5:54 a.m. PST

I can certainly add French Cav 36 x Cuirassiers and 24 Chassuers if needed. Maybe some infantry?

brush monkey10 Mar 2009 12:09 a.m. PST

bluewillow,
Thought you might be interested: There was a 7-page article in Wargames Illustrated issue 210, March 2005, describing a game held at the National Army Museum, London, based on Talavera. They used G de B rules and the article, which includes the Order of Battle is by Dave Brown, who I take to be the G de B rules author Dave Brown. ( The French won )

Unlucky General16 Oct 2009 2:19 p.m. PST

Gents all.

I just want it known that most probably the only reason Matt has appointed me as Wellesley is that I've just finished my new command stand of the man with two 10th Hussar escorts.

I will be able to field the best part of Spencer's 1st Division from the Busaco lists and Crawford's Light Division with sundry army elements (3 regiments of cavalry, foot, horse and rocket troops).

I'd like to establish everyone's desires regarding the game. Is anyone else uninspired (as I am) by large games which are an excuse to cram too many figures on an overcrowded table? I've been talking with Matt about this and I want to ascertain everyone's' views on movement and manoeuvre. We can put a little more effort into staged entry and the overall playing surface if such is the case. I like big games but not if they become a dull frontal assault.

Cheers,

Greg B
