Who makes Chinese Junks can anyone help out?

ubique108 Jan 2004 8:06 p.m. PST

Village Green used to but I don't know who stocks them

Check with JT miniatures / Merrimack. They had 15mm Junks and I think also 25mm Junks.-Time Portal hobbies

Village Green apparently still has them.

The Virtual Armchair General has some very nice but expensive ones.

You can scratch-build using tips from the Major General's site.

I got some cheap 7" long ones at Hobbylinc.

The former Village Green range is now owned by Stronghold Miniatures.

There are also some balsa kits from Woodcraft, cheap, light, need some adaption to get rid of the bottom of the hull below the waterline

Also there is a matchstick kit if you have the patience. I bought one but it is still in the box

I just bought a 1.48 scale plastic kit for a Chinese Pleasure barge (not quite a junk)locally (in Shanghai) it was pretty cheap, I can't remember how much exactly, the company name is "LEE" (never heard of them) the same shop had similar models made out of wood, looks pretty cool anyhow! Its two colour plastic.

Or of course you could do it yourself. Get some polystyrene, a polystyrene cutter, some foam card and it's quite easy.

John Kersey made half a dozen junks for his Samurai Invasion game he ran. A picture can be seen here of the demo at the Other Partizan.

Wargames Foundry still have the plans for a 28mm pirate ship on their website ( check the library section – wow something free from Foundry! ) .

There are also plans for a dhow:

With little practice, you can make one to your own specifications. I did it ( a Bark, a Brig and two Shooners later ) and I don't consider myself particularly talented.

Merrimack does not make 25mm Junks. A lot of stores carry boats/ships around Father's Day, if you want to wait that long. What is made for wargamers now is beyond my budget, so I would pick up a couple of books at the library and try my hand at making some, starting with maybe a small fishing or trading junk so I could get my technique worked out.

Revell used to do a 1:60 or1:50 Chinese Junk - an ocean going ine therefore big I think it is discontinued but may re-appear or try some dealers who deal in old plastic kits

Adding to the make your own, I've used balsa wood from the craft store to make a pretty decent junk. Hot glue, some patience and paint, and you'll have a pretty decent looking ship. Haven't put the sails on yet, but they may just get in the way of the game.

I am wondering, besides OLDGLORY25s 'junk' -- which really doesn't look much like a Junk to me!! -- is there an update to this thread on the current state of 25/28mm Chinese junks for war-gaming?? money
