Comments or corrections?

Okay, I've never played any naval rules . . . and I don't want anything too complex.

So what simple rules for the Pre-Dreadnought period do you suggest?

Take a look at Quickfire by War Times Journal.

Warring Fleets from Majestic XII is pretty simple. Best of all you can download the core rules and a scenario for free from their website to check it out.

It is hex based, but can also be played without hexes if you prefer. One of the things I like most about it that the book includes the table to allow you to convert any historical ship design into game terms.

"Warring Fleets from Majestic XII is pretty simple."

Just thought I'd add a quick correction here. The title is actually "Grand Fleets." A demo version is available on the website.

Quickfire is really, really neat.

"Damned Battleships Again" is good and simple.

"Naval Thunder" is a good system and not complicated:

They have a pre-dread system.

We play pre-dreads with 1/600 scale OG ships. At this scale we use small fleets (3-4 ships) and use Seekrieg IV. It's free, but perhaps not for beginners.
