The movie must be based on a game of some type (computer game, videogame, boardgame…).

DontFearDareaper Fezian04 Feb 2009 8:11 a.m. PST

If you include documentaries then Uber-Goober. An absolutely stellar cast especially that dapper fellow in the white shirt shown during the miniatures segment evil grin

if not then …hmmmm might have to redefine best to stinks a little less than the others.

Doom maybe ..??? Pretty stinky by the end but starts out ok

I thought that the one where the chick gets stuck in the alternate dimension and the town turned into hell because they were worshiping the devil or something wasn't bad. I didn't actually know it was a video game until someone told me afterward. Then it did seem like a video game in parts.

Pictors Studio04 Feb 2009 8:17 a.m. PST

Was resident evil a video game first? Because that was pretty good too.

DontFearDareaper Fezian04 Feb 2009 8:24 a.m. PST

I think Resident Evil was a video game first. I know House of the Dead and Wing Commander were games first.

Was resident evil a video game first?

yes it was I think they were on RE 3 when the first movie came out.

I think the first final fantasy movie was the best one based on a game.

Steve Hazuka04 Feb 2009 8:32 a.m. PST

Resident Evil
M O R T A L C O M B A T finish him

But I will never say no matter how baddly you twist my arm or even threaten to melt my miniatures that any D&D movie was….good. See I can't even type those words.

Wing Commander?

Clue

ArchiducCharles04 Feb 2009 9:12 a.m. PST

Silent Hill was not bad either. Not great either, though.

Steve04 Feb 2009 9:16 a.m. PST

King of Kong hands down.

Steve Hazuka04 Feb 2009 9:29 a.m. PST

Now that you mention CLUE that is a favorite.

Was Jumamji a real game or just made up for the movie?

Steve Hazuka04 Feb 2009 9:30 a.m. PST

Anyone want to mention SUPER MARIO BROTHERS?

"Talisman" as made by Uwe Boll?

aka Mikefoster04 Feb 2009 9:41 a.m. PST

Mortal Combat, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil were decent.

Street Fighter, Super Mario Brothers, and Double Dragon were horrible.

Then there is this: link

Delthos04 Feb 2009 9:49 a.m. PST

Jumanji and Zathura were both based on children's books, each book the same name as it's respective movie, by author Chris Van Allsburg. They may have put out games for them since the movies were made, but they didn't exist except in the stories.

My 7 year old son and I enjoy watching them. They are almost roleplaying game like in their presentation.

In the books, both Jumanji and Zathura are fictional games whose events "come to life." Neither book has that much in the way of a an overarching plot or backstory. Those were added for the films. But the games were completely made up.

So the order is: Book about a fictional boardgame then movie based on the book then game based on the game from the movie.

pictor's studio

that was silent hill, and it was pretty good. very creepy, like the game.

If people have not seen the live action Halo shorts on youtube, you are missing out. They are spectacular. When (or if) the feature comes out, it will be hands down the best videogame movie.

nazrat04 Feb 2009 10:56 a.m. PST

Unless the story and script blows, which is unfortunately more than likely.

As for "good" game adaptations, I agree about Clue. Fun movie with an all star cast. The first Resident Evil was pretty good (for a movie I watched on HBO), and what I saw of Tombraider was decent. But most of them can barely meet the "mediocre" standard.

Jakar Nilson04 Feb 2009 11:05 a.m. PST

Clue. The best adaptation ever!

"But it could have ended like this…"

Street Fighter, Super Mario Brothers, and Double Dragon were horrible.

I remember enjoying Street Fighter. I think I was the only one, though.

Bloodrain

Just kidding -- all were horriable

ArchiducCharles04 Feb 2009 2:03 p.m. PST

Hey richarDMB, don't forget the timeless classics House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark.

The G Dog Fezian04 Feb 2009 2:21 p.m. PST

Would Firefly/Serenity count – its supposedly heavily inspired by GDW's Traveller.

Space Monkey04 Feb 2009 6:55 p.m. PST

I'm a fan of the Silent Hill games and thought the movie was pretty decent.

The Resident Evil movies were fairly entertaining as well.

Boone Doggle04 Feb 2009 6:55 p.m. PST

Resident Evil. Milla Jovovich. Case closed.

Tomb Raider isn't too bad. Would have been better with Milla Jovovich.

And no-one has mentioned the under-rated Dungeons and Dragons, the only mainstream movie based on an RPG.

What we need next is a movie based on a miniatures game. Wonder if Milla Jovovich will go for it.

recon3505 Feb 2009 7:32 a.m. PST

Why not a DBA movie. It would only need to be about six hours long.

nazrat05 Feb 2009 8:34 a.m. PST

And boring, drab, and awful as well!

Chrono HAL Fezian05 Feb 2009 9:12 a.m. PST

Mortal Kombat. Definetly.

CeruLucifus05 Feb 2009 10:27 a.m. PST

BooneC: … Milla Jovovich. Case closed.

LOL. My sentiments precisely.

Doctor Bedlam05 Feb 2009 2:24 p.m. PST

I'm sorry, but the first Dungeons and Dragons movie made me cringe. I had really hoped for something better, especially hearing that Thora Birch and Jeremy Irons were going to be in it.

I didn't realize they meant "Thora Birch on thorazine and Jeremy Irons on hallucinogenics and speed." If he'd been flapping his arms any harder, his feet would have left the ground…

Mick A05 Feb 2009 2:57 p.m. PST

I really enjoyed Mutant Chronicles…

richarDISNEY16 Mar 2009 12:58 p.m. PST

YEa… What about the second D&D movie… Wraith of the Dragon God. That was actually pretty good…

And Mutant Chronicles was good too.

Damnatus (German Fan 40K film) was good. Too bad my German is shoddy, but I got some of it. Enough to piece together.

Scorpio29 Apr 2009 1:04 p.m. PST

Tragically, we can't inclue TV shows, so we can't have Kindred: the Embraced or the old D&D cartoon in there.

Serenity wasn't that influenced by Traveller, so I wouldn't include it. It's be like including Lord of the Rings, which was clearly inspired by D&D.

Other movies to include: Hitman, Pokemon.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian03 Sep 2009 5:27 p.m. PST

Sleuth.

Features a game, but is not based on a game (as far as I can tell).

"Talisman" as made by Uwe Boll?

Can't find such a movie.

RebelPaul04 Sep 2009 12:12 p.m. PST

Quite frankly, I've seen many of those titles and its my opinion that movies SHOULD not be made out of video games. Why? The people who make these movies are not gamers themselves and have no idea what they are really dealing with.

And unless the game is story-oriented, it will not probably not translate to a movie very well.

I was really dissapointed with Wing Commander. After all the great WC games, that piece of cinematic crap was the best they could do? I was looking forwared to see Maclom McDowell as Admiral Wingate. Plus, would have liked to have seen the KIlrathi.

To think I enjoyed the animated series so much, so much more so than the movie.

christot04 Sep 2009 2:41 p.m. PST

"It's be like including Lord of the Rings, which was clearly inspired by D&D."

Whoever said Americans can't do irony?

CeruLucifus04 Sep 2009 3:54 p.m. PST

As a video game made into something dramatic, watchable and interesting, "Resident Evil", hands down.

"Clue" is certainly the best movie made from a board game.
