Hi,

I am currently researching armour of the first crusade and have ended up going round in circles for some of it. I was just wondering if any of you knowledgeable fellows would be able to recommend some good reads.

The main area I am looking into is armour of the lower classes.

Any help would be much appreciated.

David Nicolle's "Arms and Armour of the Crusading Era" is a good collection of drawings of primary sources, as well as extensive notes. Mine was the first printing of the two volumes. Not sure who's publishing it now, but it's easy enough to Google.

Ah; here you go:

Just a caution: for the First Crusade, your main area is very poorly documented.

IIRC some of the lower class combatants were armoured with horse blankets & wore cooking pots on their heads for helmets – at least according to the WRG Crusades book. I'm not quite old enough to speak from personal experience.

Here are some other books by D. Nicolle that are worth having:

Crusader Warfare: Byzantium, Western Europe and the Struggle for the Holy Land 1050-1300 AD (v. 1)

Crusader Warfare: Muslims, Mongols and the Struggle Against the Crusades 1050-1300 AD (v. 2)

Here are three translated sources (Latin, Greek, Arabic) from the era at a fair price:

The First Crusade: "The Chronicle of Fulcher of Chartres" and Other Source Materials

The Alexiad

There are many more translated sources, but they can be quite dear.
