Are there any tutorials on how to sculpt a proper cowboy hat on any figure?

Any other suggestions on how I can "westernize" these little guys, so they can blend better in the Old West?

I may have plans for them:

Thanks.

Take a figure with a cowboy hat and make a drop mold of da hat. Chop off the top o' the head and affix the molded hat grin
One of the lads at the bengal Club uses this method to make federales out of practically any figure <sigh> <chuckle>
Nice figures, who makes 'em ?

Would spare hats from the Perry ACW box do it, assuming they (or the humans they are interacting with) are 28mm?

I've got a few hanging round, so you could pm me with an address if you want me to send them.

file down the top of the head until you come down to where the hat rim is and just file a peg. You can cut out a thin brass strip in the proper shape and epoxy glue it to the peg. Or you can roll out a thin piece of epoxy putty (green preferable and between two pieces of non stick plastic) wait for it to mostly cure. Cut out the shape of the brim and set the shape for it (flat, curled on sides, front & back broken down, ect.)

For the top simply add a blob of epoxy putty and sculpt it into shape as it hardens. With your google fu, you should be able to find websites selling cowboy hats and the various styles that the crown and brim can be brought to.

I have used a thin brass washer (easier to bend than the zinc/steel ones) for the brim and a blob of green stuff for the crown.

A green stuff neck kerchief or boots might work too.

Hmmm ok I will bite…CC that is a terrible idea.

Unless your goal is strickly for a gonzo goofball game I personnal would not ruin a good figure like that.

Just me maybe…a poncho and saddle on an picture entelodont maybe…because that at least serves a function…nice indian style hand print paint on the haunch…but the little alien with a 10 gallon hat…hmmm not so much.

But to each his own.

If Lucas McCain had been the chief of security on board the Enterprise a lot of the stories would have been much shorter.

The Major General's page has a tutorial on using Sculpey (polymer clay) to make conical Chinese coolie hats to convert plastic Caribbean pirates into Malay pirates. Might be adaptable for cowboy hats.
Here's the link: link -- look for the paragraph "Mass Producing Conical Hats".

Though I must say, I like the brass washer idea.

Thanks for the candid reply. Now you have me wondering – not about the hats, just on what figures to put the hats on.

Thanks.

Not trying to rain on your parade CC, really. If you were intending for a funny miniature then that would be a zany one for sure. But otherwise it just seemed a bit too silly especially if you were looking to have a serious or somewhat serious game.

The actual sculpt would be an easy one if you must do it… small smooth ball, wax paper with small circles cut into it, press ball in, lift off wax paper, set on head, press down with tool, roll edges…cowboy hat

I'm sure i've seen a grey wearing a cowboy hat as some point…….miniature that is, I just cannot remember where.

Ya cain't back down now, CC. If'n ya don't put Stetsons on at least some of them there Gray fellers, then I'm sayin' yer YELLER!

:)

I may try sculpting hats on lesser figures first, and work my way up to them Grey fellers.

PS. Glad to see I'm not the only one who's thought of doing something like this:

Don't underestimate the shock value (and laughs) you'll get at a game. And yes, people will make cracks like, "Take me to your trail boss, earthling!" But so what? A fun game is a fun game!
