4 match reports now posted on madaxeman.com to show how our Arab Swarm army fared at 900 ap.

I've also set up a new feature, "add your own comments on our performance" – so you can have a go at adding to the pearls of wisdom of regular expert analyst Hannibal as well…

..if you dare ..

Entertaining as usual. Loved the comment about the armored Lombard lancers. Been on both ends of that stick many a time. :)

In all your battles there wasn't much terrain.

While the Arab army is mostly mounted they actually perform better against many armies if the terrain is more restricted. This is due to a couple of reasons, namely the few medium infantry units they have are much more effective (even game winning) and secondly the opposition armies are often even worse off in restricted terrain.

I find the best option is to max out the number of open fields. Open fields have no effect on your mediums and your cav only slightly disadvantaged compared to enemy knights.

Our army had almost no infantry, as we wanted to surprise our enemies with the composition, and also we expected many armies to want to take steppe terrain against us (ie they would be assuming we had infantry in bucketloads).

Open fields dont work for this composition as they mean the lancers lose their lance bonus in them – which pretty much renders them impotent against any other cavalry. It also means there is no +1 POA for cavalry fighting MF in the open. Also MF don't take a -1 in the cohesion test for losing to cavalry in the open. So bad all round really.

I've also found terrain in FoG is often more a place where you commit your own mediums for no appreciable gain, and the enemy simply sail round it and ignore them. You waste points "taking" terrain you cant risk coming out of.
