Can anyone recommend source material or even personal memoirs dealing with Great War Aviation over the Channel and along the coast of the North Sea. Brit, Belgian, German, French, -- doesn't matter.

Thanks in advance.

"Before the Aircraft Carrier" and "Naval Aviation in the First World War, both by RD Layman would be a good start.

"Naval Aviation in the First World War" gives a top down view. For a view from the ground "Wings Over Westgate" by Geoffrey Williams is good. The Windsock datafile for The Sopwith Baby also has diary extracts and lists the types of mission flown.

If you find anything similar for Zeebrugge please tell me where.

Hello again,

I have just finished reading "The Spider Web" by Squadron Leader T. D. Hallam. These memoirs detail the goings on at Felixtowe 1917 to 1918 mainly on submarine and Zeppelin patrols over The North Sea.

I found it fascinating, and full of little details and scenario ideas for wargames. E.g.

"Sixty miles out from land the pilots saw in front of them five little specks upon the water. As they came up with them they saw that they were five Hun seaplanes waiting to attack our patrols, sitting on the water in order to conserve petrol…..[they] took to the air in a good V formation."

And so on. The edition I have was printed in 1979 by Arms and Armour Press. Heartily recommended.

Now I just have to find a 1/144 Porte Baby.
