Wal-Mart locally has about a dozen 1/144 Yank spitfires paired with the usual Me-262 on clearance for $5 USD for the pair. Now, that's a GOOD price for just one plane kit, unainted!
I also have access to sheets of 1/144 decals forthe RAF.

So, what shades of brown and green should I get to repaint them in proper Battle of Britain Livery? I am perfectly willing to ignore the fact that the 21st C planes are Spitfire IX, or whatever. At that scale, a Spitfire is a Spitfire. AND they are cheap.

Testors, Polly Scale, Vallejo, Citadel, etc. I am open for any suggestions, since most paints are locally available. When my car's battery isn't dead, that is.

I used VMC 143 Flat Earth for the brown, 971 Green Grey for the underneath and I can't remember what for the green – 888 Olive Grey, possibly.

John, for BoB browns I'll use VMC 143 Flat Earth or VMC 135 beige brown. For the green I use VMC 095 US Dark Green. I can't recall what I use for the bellies – probably VMC #? duck egg green or VMC light Gray 155. VMC = vallejo model color.

OK, thanks.

For what it's worth, I based my colour choices on the Humbrol colours listed on the Airfix instructions, and a Humbrol-VMC conversion chart.

John, have you tried just dropping in at a local model train shop that carries paints. Several companies make the exact colors. British Dark Earth and Dark Green and Sky Type S would be the colors you want. There is also a specific pattern to the camoflage. They had an A scheme and a B scheme which was the mirror of the A scheme. And you could, if you wanted to try a different underwing scheme, paint the port half of the entire aircraft black and the starboard half white. The RAF also changed the size of the roundels. During the Battle the fuselage roundel was quite large with a yellow outer ring, the fin flash covered most of the front of the vertical fin , the upper wing roundels didn't have the white ring around the red center. You could also put your own initials on the aircraft in place of the squadron letters. Some of the aces were allowed to personalize their aircraft that way. Johnny Johnson flew with JEJ

The paint scheme on the 1/144th isn't even close to the type A or B scheme by the way, if you were thinking of just painting it over.

For my BofB Spits MkI/II I used:

Green – VJ 893 US dark green or Humbrol 30 olive

Brown – Humbrol 29 Earth, there is an exact match to this in the VJ range, check out the conversion charts.

Undersides – Humbrol 90 beige green
