So, I'm taking advantage of nvdoyle's purge and picking up some SWAT teams and hostage rescue squad. I plan on using the hostage rescue squad as high-tech criminals, like in the movie Heat or the real-life North Hollywood Shootout. So basic scenario would be high-tech criminals holed up in a bank or some such, after hours (no need to paint hostages this way) and the SWAT teams need to take them out (thus no need to worry about incapacitating, just straight up shoot fest). I downloaded Chain Reaction 2.0 and it looks pretty good, but I'm wondering what else is out there that can be downloaded that might fit the bill. Thoughts? |

I second Ambush Alley. It's not free, but it's the best, in my humble opinion. |

By "downloadable" I was assuming "free". If you don't mind paying then
I third Ambush Alley. It may take some minor tweaks to get it to play the scenario you want. Join the Yahoo Group and/or the Forum on the Ambush Alley website. The people there (including the designer Shawn) will only be too glad to help. Tim |

Ambush Alley is pretty awesome. I recently downloaded the FREE rules and after reading them and the load of After Action reporst out there I dove in and bought all the AA stuff. For a different approach you can always take a look at Combat Zone by EM-4. It is VERY suited to smaller games and what you are describing. I also bought a load of stuff from nvdoyle and will be using CZ for some things, Walords 2085, Ambush Alley and Savage Worlds Showdowns. Walords: skankgame.com/index.html Thanks, John |

I would echo most folks sentiments about Ambush Alley. I too, like my comrade John Leahy went ahead and picked up everything. I can see it being used for a variety of periods and genres with a little tweaking. |

That's exactly one of the scenarios I'm hoping to game. I'm working on 1920's gangsters right now, but a similar scenario. I would strongly urge you to give THW's Chain Reaction 2.0 a test before abandoning it for something else. CR2.0 provides enough flexibility to handle most of those odd situations that don't appear in military settings. One of my favorite is to have "the press" running around getting in the way. Put some street protesters out there, and you can do Dog Day Afternoon. - Bob |
