Hello all I'm thinking of start AWI in 10mm, using the Pendraken and Old Glory figures. What do you think about the scale? 6mm is just too small for my liking. Thanks Brett |

10 mm. is a great scale for wargaming, and has been one of the fastest growing figure scales in the last five years. It provides a great sense of mass, good scaling possibilities to the table top, and allows larger collections than larger and more expensive figures. Selection from several sources is very good and also growing. My favorite 10mm figures at the moment are Pendraken. The AWI line is simply superb, being sculpted by one of the best. Go to the site and look at the painted British Figures there. You'll see that the detail and character in these figures is excellent! One possibility is to use 6MM building and structures, which more closely fit the ground scale at Brigade/ army/ corps level. At lower levels 10mm structures can be used. In the AWI a typical engagement would easily fit on a 4x6 table, maybe even smaller. |

I think 10mm is great, but I don't think Pendraken and Old Glory mix that well,. |

Brett With 10mm one way is to decide on Pendraken vs Old Glory and stick with your choice. Just decide which range has the figures that appeal to you and go for it. Although I personally would not mix and match the ranges that does not mean that you should not consider it. After all it is your money and your choice so there is no law that says you cannot do it! Bear in mind that in addition there is also the old ODGW range that is now produced by Tom Dye's outfit, GFI, out in Colorado and I believe the old Scruby line is available via Historifigs. So there are several choices in 10mm albeit not as many as in 15mm or 25mm/28mm but that is changing. The 10mm scale lends itself very well to the AWI with figure to man scale of 1:10 or 1:5 being very accessible in a reasonable amount of space. Good luck with whiche ever route you go! TM |

I'm a big fan of 10mm but in my opinion, Old Glory and Pendraken are on the opposite ends of 10mm size wise with Pendraken being on the smaller end and Old Glory on the larger. The old ODGW range (comparable quality with both OG and Pendraken) that GFI has is right in the middle size wise and would probably better serve as the second manufacturer in your arsenal whoever you choose between OG and Pendraken. I haven't seen the old Historifigs but as they were much earlier sculpts, they may seem somewhat less detailed compared to the newer ranges. |

I do the Seven Years War with Old Glory, Pendraken and Irregular. 10mm is a fantastic scale you can get quite a bit of detail and the mass effect is really great. I have also done American Civil War in 10m and Gettysburg is huge. I would greatly recommend 10mm for large scale conflicts even more than 6mm. With Old glory I can field 10 figs abreast to the 8 figs abreast for Baccus 6mm as the Old glory are packed tight on bases. Where old glory makes nice rank and file, Pendraken makes very well sculpted models that I work in for cavalry and command. You can see some of my figs on my blog and my painting 10mm tutorial will be in the spring issue of Dadi&Piambo. cavenderia.blogspot.com ciao, |

My club has gone to 10mm for Napoleonics, which allow us to field much larger forces on our limited table space. I don't see a plus for 10mm AWI though as the armies are not that large anyway. I would think 15mm would work best, especially if one already has terrain for that scale. |

After years of 15mm gaming I tried 10mm for fPW but I did it for a mass effect so I was putting 7 10mm on bases where I'd have put 3 or 4 15mm Actually in terms of polls, it might be interesting to see whether gamers go for 10mm to get more units on smaller bases on the table or whether they stick with a something like a 15mm base size and get more troops per ubit. I'm more than impressed with Pendraken and near the end of this shortish thread TMP link Clibinarium, the guy who does Pendraken's masters, posts a link to a WIP on an AWI master he's working on. |

10 mm great, and I would opt for Pendraken as well |

I ended up going for 15mm for my AWI, but was ready to go 10mm. I recieved a sample pack from ODGW and they blew me away. Unfortunately the company discontinued production shortly there after, and as pendraken were not available I went with my second choice whch was 15mm. I do have small armies of Baccus 6mm and they look great, but AWI is one period where I think 10mm would be ideal. If you can check out a sample pack from each manufacturer and decide from that which sizes styles you like, and which mix and match to your tastes. (FRX I find that GFI/Minifis and Pendraken Samurai foot match excelently, but the cavalry do not match at all) |

Dave ODGW did not go out of production they were sold onto GFI (Tom Dye's enterprise) and so continue to be available: link |

Thannks for your help everybody. I prefer the look of the Pendraken figures at the moment. It's just a shame they don't make cavalry or artillery. I can use their SYW artillery as a substitute though. |
clibinarium | 25 Jan 2009 10:47 a.m. PST |
The first of the cavalry and artillery will be available fairly soon. |
Brett1815 | 25 Jan 2009 2:08 p.m. PST |
Excellent! That may have made the choice of figures for me. |

I use the 10mm 10mm AIM from GFI-Minifigs for my AmRev. |

My only hold-up vis-a-vis Pendraken was/is assurance that they'd finish the line, but if cavalry and artillery are on the way, I'll be all over it. I was never much of an AWI fan – and it's still probably not my all-time favorite period – but I like the SYW/WAS, and a chance to collect every part of an army is really appealing. Great news on a good thread. Thanks. |

10mm is definitely the way I want to go. This is the kind of results you get in 10mm link Pendraken, AIM and OG offer some great figures and all have good service. THe work well in an army, but I wouldn't mix them in the same unit.
Musket Miniatures do some great buildings for this scale. Elliott |

Hi Elliott I assume that the 'N' scale buildings are the 10mm ones on the Musket Miniatures site? Thanks Brett |

Brent, They are the ones. I like them – nice clean castings but their footprint is reasonable. Last year I got some 10mm buildings from OG at 10mm but I found that they are closer to 15mm that 10mm. WHen 'La Belle Alliance" inn is almost 7" long I tend to think isn't going to work at 10mm. Here are some of the MM buildings: link link link The mill has be discontinued unfortuantely |

Very nice! I like the look of the Napoleonic game as well. Another favourite period of mine! Thanks |
