* static "gun line" army
* fast cavalry force
* knightly army
* infantry horde
* powerful hero-heavy force
* other (describe briefly)

richarDISNEY23 Jan 2009 8:23 a.m. PST

None. I play Vampire Counts…

Damaged Drew23 Jan 2009 8:24 a.m. PST

How about mobile and shooty? Wood Elves?

When I played WHFB regularly I had a unit of 40 Beastmen that made up the core of my chaos army, so I have to go with infantry horde.

Empire army

I have a Kislev army which is mainly horse and foot "cossacks"

Bring up the guns..!

streetline23 Jan 2009 8:54 a.m. PST

Gun lines are just so dull, though. You might win, but you won't get many repeat games.

Note that my recent loss to a gun line in no way informs this post.

AndrewGPaul23 Jan 2009 9:01 a.m. PST

I always liked the look of a mobile gun army – lots of Outriders and Pistoliers, War Wagons and Steam tanks, and plenty of Bright wizards. grin. No idea how it would perform, though.

A plain gun line is asking to get picked on by fast cavalry and fliers; Harpies, Eagles, etc.

static "gun line" army

CLDecker23 Jan 2009 9:05 a.m. PST

Witch Hunters Dogs of War with mercenary Slayers and Ogres that dress like slayers, a gun line unit and a unit of Kislev foot sloggers.

Not GW legal, but fun

smcwatt23 Jan 2009 9:13 a.m. PST

Big blocks of Halbrediers with Handgunner detachments. Some Free Company and Flagellents to act as speed bumps on the flanks. Cannons and mortars, with a unit of knights for shock attack.

SMc.

WarmasterCharlie23 Jan 2009 9:17 a.m. PST

Big chunks of infantry with artillery and cavalry support.

chonk3423 Jan 2009 9:29 a.m. PST

I like an Empire army that is broken and running away from my hordes of Skaven and Greenskins.

mweaver23 Jan 2009 10:07 a.m. PST

Mostly I paint 'em and don't play 'em. I have a bit of everything. I really like the artillery (although it isn't very reliable). I also have a large number of heavy knights. I guess the mix I have played most often has been a hard center (knights and greatswords) backed by several artillery pieces, with swordsmen, handgunners, and spearmen in small units to protect the artillery.

StCrispin23 Jan 2009 10:39 a.m. PST

I like a well rounded mix of foot, cavalry and shooting. For fun, I like sigmar themed stuff, i.e. flagellants, warrior priests and arch lectors (I have no idea how to spell this stuff).

The great thing about the empire is the variety of cool choices, and cheap point costs.

All this being said, I do not usually win, as my opponent usually brings vampire counts, and I always fail my fear checks at crucial moments.

nazrat23 Jan 2009 11:59 a.m. PST

St Crispin plays the Empire the same way I do, with a good selection of everything. I avoid the shooty type players like the plague. It's absolutely no fun to play them, especially with my Dwarf force. We end up sitting on either side of the board plunking away at each other and since I bring a minimum of war machines and shooty units I plunk far less than he does.

I'm just starting an army of Altdorf. I'm leaning towards a close combat infantry heavy army lead by Warrior priests with a smattering of cavalry and shooters/arty

Beowulf Fezian23 Jan 2009 12:05 p.m. PST

Mainly infantry, with cavalry support. Few cannons and handgunners. The Steam Tank is usually present, though.

LeadLair7623 Jan 2009 12:37 p.m. PST

I like having lots of large infantry units with a couple of cannons and a mortar. Throw in a unit or two of pistoliers and another of knights and while it isn't going to win any tournaments it is fun to play and hopefully fun to play against.

Tommy2023 Jan 2009 1:06 p.m. PST

Back when I played, I fielded a fairly well-rounded army. The infantry line had blocks of halberds w/detachments of handgunners. Knights on one flank, Pistoliers on the other, and an artillery park with as many cannon & mortars as I could afford.

The Nigerian Lead Minister23 Jan 2009 1:19 p.m. PST

Infantry, with some knights for shock attack on the flanks of those stuck to the front of my infantry.

I've played against the Empire Panzer Division (knights, 2 stanks, and two cannon), wasn't very intersting, too one dimensional.

I'd expect an army of Altdorf to be pretty wizard-heavy, too.

Xintao23 Jan 2009 4:35 p.m. PST

I started with a Gun Line. It works well. Especially back in 4th edition when I got 40 halfling archers (BS-4) for 2.5 points each.

As I've grown the army I have, I think a balanced army, Maybe Infantry heavy. I like 3 big blocks of spear/sword/Hal, detach of bow/swordsmen. At least 2 Arty, 1 or 2 Knight units, and most importantly Pistoleers. They are worth their weight in gold. Any left over points, Id take a Xbow/handgun unit depending what I'm facing.

No fanatics, no outriders, no helblasters.

I mainly only play the same 2 guys, So I mix it up so they don't know what they are getting. I can go a couple of diff ways. But the above set up is my current fav. Some of my figs are 20 years old. Where did the time go?

Cheers, Xin

I liked the heavily converted Witchunter army in White Dwarf from a couple of years ago. If I needed another army to build that would be it.

Marienburg, with DoW and RoR.

Delthos23 Jan 2009 6:37 p.m. PST

I like a mixed force. A couple big blocks of swordsmen and spearmen with halberdier detachments, a unit of handgunners and crossbowmen, some cannons and a mortar, a unit of knights, a unit of pistoliers, and mix of characters depending upon my current whims. I'm not a big fan of the Steamtank, its far too easy to damage and make it useless. Most of my friends play armies with bolt throwers or cannons, so it's 300 points of too expensive!

Crankee Doodle23 Jan 2009 7:53 p.m. PST

Large blocks of infantry (with detachments) for me!

Baconfat23 Jan 2009 8:58 p.m. PST

An all gunpowder army. Handgunners, artillery, pistoliers, and outriders.

Grinning Norm25 Jan 2009 2:10 a.m. PST

A mix that tends to lose rather often.

Of course, I haven't played warhammer for 2 or 3 years. Thanks for reminding.

Grinning Norm25 Jan 2009 2:11 a.m. PST

And add the 'mixed bag'-army to the options.

Capt Flash02 Feb 2009 12:20 p.m. PST

Knights and cannon with mercenary ogres as my main infantry block…obviously haven't played in a few years.
Working on an Empire/mercenary army to represent Estalia.

Alfrik19 Feb 2009 1:19 p.m. PST

I have a simple approach when I still play at it, Chaos, as it has really everything in one or the other power, I have assembled one of Slanneesh, Khorne, Nurgle and Tzeentch and can easily do the Chaos United.
