Any suggestions, ideas, encouragement, wisdom, etc., to a guy who is giving this some thought (I am a 15mm virgin)? :)

Thanks a million.

Hi, that would be me. I have the figs painted and made a 15mm Stargate from card.

There are all sorts of rule variants aand other cool stuff. If you want some files and AAR's from a Chain Reaction mini campaign let me know and I'll send em. Also some cool stuff at the Stargate gamer's yahoo group.

Thanks,

John

Hi CC

I played some Stargate inspired games using Alien Squad Leader. Characters and 'Anubis' warriors were based singly but fought the same as a 'squad' element.

My own Stargate Command figures were QRF Modern US Rangers in caps – good poses if a little rough and ready. picture

I originally used the standard Alien Imperial army list but created my own for Stargate Command. TLater, Alex created a Children of the Gods army, which better suited Stargate etc.

You can find the Alien Squad Leader Yahoo Group here: link

I recommend you check out both the Alien Imperial and Children of the Gods folders in the photos section.

You can get a good flavour of AsQL from the Death Rays at Dawn supplements provided free at the 15mm_co_uk website: link

The Children of the Gods army list and profile is here: 15mm.co.uk/pdf/DRatD6.pdf. If you PM me with your personal email address I'll email you my Stargate Command list.

Cheers

If I were to start again, I would seriously consider 20mm. There are some very nice figures in 20mm for moderns, and the Shieldwall figs have a very good bunch of Jaffa in 20mm.

Since so much of my terrain and figures are in 25/28mm, it just wouldn't be practical for me. One of the beauties of Stargate type adventures is that those big metal donuts can lead to anywhere or anytime. I've used figures from just about every time period I own.

Tgunner19 Jan 2009 8:37 p.m. PST

I'm heading toward the 15mm scale too. I've played SG-1 in 20mm, but I think I prefer 15mm. The scale is cheaper and so on.

Chain Reaction is a great ruleset too! It works great for this small scale skirmishing. So don't feel alone in going 15mm!

Artslave: "One of the beauties of Stargate type adventures is that those big metal donuts can lead to anywhere or anytime."

What if it takes 25-28mm figures into a 15mm world??? :)

artslave19 Jan 2009 10:23 p.m. PST

I can just see it now! Annoying little jaffa! Staff weapon does 1D6 damage, but they can fire from hidden without terrain penalties, like Pygmies. Also very hard to hit!

Even more annoying, the Stargate is 15mm on the "other" side. Characters have to climb back through, moving at crawl rate.

Seriously though, no one makes 15mm jaffa. This by itself is not a deal breaker. There is nothing preventing a workable fudge-up of some jaffa from Egyptians or figures in chain mail. As far as that goes, there is no reason to lock into only one sort of adversary from the SG universe. I am very fond of the Genni from SG-A. Well, fond is not the right word for evil guys like Kolya, but you know what I mean. Good villains that are non-snake or vampire clones.

Cacique Caribe19 Jan 2009 11:39 p.m. PST

How about terrain and scenics? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Ground Zero Games do some Sci Fi Egyptians in their 15mm line.

I haven't seen them myself but Jon's stuff is usually 1st rate.

Well, I had no idea that these were actually available. I had been told that they were not. Then I stand corrected. As most things for Stargate gaming, everything always seems in flux. I got involved with this project just as the figures from Eureka had disappeared. Before I discovered alternatives, I scratch-built jaffa, stargates, puddle jumpers and everything else.

I'll go away now, back to my 28mm hideout and leave this thread to the folk in the know.

I have played home-brew rules in 15mm with our Moderns and the GZG Egyptians and QRF Vehicles. Lots of fun but very loose. I think we used Aztec Ruins/StarGate in the scenario.

I will say this, of the games we played, having an RPG element was more intersting. Missions, events and character goals make for some great gaming.

artslave21 Jan 2009 11:48 a.m. PST

I strongly agree! No matter what the scale of the figures, the game needs RPG elements. As a straight up battle, the Goa'uld should be able to wipe out anything that pops out of the metal donuts, or land a force of thousands from the pyramid ship. I have thought about more "straight-up" military battles like the ones from the McCay books, but really, that is not the essential element of the SG world. Even the movie, with the mass battle scene near the end gets interesting as only a distraction for the main plot. The TV shows have made a effort to not resolve everything with bullets and plasma. It is always more complicated than that.

Glenn M21 Jan 2009 7:40 p.m. PST

I wrote my own rules for Stargate gaming, though I do it in 28mm as that is the same scale I normally play at. I use the Shieldwall games figures for my Jaffa and Copplestone Castings for my military.

Each player gets around 5-8 figures, and attempts to complete a few objectives. First player to complete 2 of the 3 wins. Gameplay is very simple as it was written to be more of a Convention game than something I'd play all the time. Check the Yahoo group for the rules, though I have to remake all the objective cards and such (again, got lost in a format . . .)

Obrooks24 Jan 2009 7:05 p.m. PST

Hi,
First post and all that. Anyway i signed up because of this topic, you see after reading i spent some money on some 20mm shield wall games anubis warriors 2 of each pack and then 2 packs of human warriors or rather un-hemled jaffa. So next i need some rules i was thinking Chain Reaction, having had a quick look at the rules i am a bit stumped what to do about the jaffa. Oh and one more thing any suggestions on a stargate?

tberry740324 Jan 2009 8:06 p.m. PST

Do you have a link for Shieldwall?

The only manufacturer by that name listed in the Manufacturers section does not seem to be the right site.

I created my Stargate out of card. there are a few downloads (free) on the net. They MAY be at the Stargate Gamer's yahoo group. I scaled the one down though. It was for 25mm not 15mm or 20mm.

Thanks,

I forgot to mention that AT the Yahoo group there is a guy who created stats and a mini-campaign for Stargate using Chain Reaction. It is very cool. It includes after Action reports.

Thanks,

John

Hey cheers guys,
the shield wall link: tinyurl.com/bow7ex

Cacique Caribe25 Jan 2009 10:49 a.m. PST

Obrooks,

Thanks for the link.

I always pictured that the Jaffa would tower over mere humans. I don't know. I guess I pictured the Goauld as masters in genetic engineering or, at the very least, selective breeding – in order to get the strongest human troops possible.

If the Shieldwall ones are a bit taller than the 15mm "SG troops" made by the other lines, that would fit in perfectly with my plans. Or, at least, I could end up having a good mixture of "Jaffa" figures, with the Shieldwall ones as a separate and elite cast.

What do you guys think about that reasoning?

CC

Obrooks25 Jan 2009 1:07 p.m. PST

:) Glad i could be of some use, CC any idea on what rule set you are going to use? Personally i am going to use chain reaction. Oh and when the minitures come i will try and get some photos up. Cheers guys :)

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP25 Jan 2009 9:13 p.m. PST

CC, I think any issue using the 20mm figs may arise from the heft of the figs. If the 20mm are actually 20mm and not 24 or 25mm and their heft is similar than they should work.

I never really though of Jaffa as taller. Maybe healthier and well developed. But not 7 ft tall. The Gzg 15mm figs are taller than the SG-1 infantry. I also whacked the head off one of my Jaffa and used an ancient Nubian head for my Prime figure. I painted my Elite Jaffa a different scheme than my regular warriors. I have about 70= of them now.

Did anyone check out that Chain Reaction mini-campaign? It really is pretty cool and has associated AAR's.

Savage World's Showdown's also has a nice looking set of Stargate variants.

I like the idea of reinforcements for the Jaffa using RINGS to enter the game )(ala the Chain Reaction variant). Very cool idea.

Thanks,

John

Cacique Caribe25 Jan 2009 9:27 p.m. PST

No idea on the rules just yet. At the rate things get painted on my table, I think I have plenty of time to learn the rules, when the time comes.

However, I want to make sure that, before diving in I have the right choices in figures.

Thanks.

John could you tell me where on the yahoo group, the aar is for cr2?

Thanks.

artslave26 Jan 2009 8:12 p.m. PST

I have just sent in my registration form for Origins Game Fair for 2009. I will be running 6 Stargate miniature games during the convention using AEG's Stargate D20 with my modifications for tabletop. I use the rules to outline weapons, actions and damage, but at set amounts. (no roll for how much damage if the figure scores a hit) I use the RPG rules straight up when I run this as a roll playing game, and I like the rules system a lot.

We use Flying Lead (Ganesha Games) for our SG-1 action … true I did write them but then again primarily did it so I could use the SOBH mechanics for SG-1 and WWII squad action :)

Episodes last about an hour :)

Here are some items that could be used to decorate your temples, tombs, palaces, tunnels and corridors:

However, as nice as those goodies are . . .

They really don't satisfy the need for Egyptian doors and columns, for low ceiling tunnels and corridors (max height about 30mm) in 15mm gaming:

Guys,

If any of you have the Konami Aliens figures, look at the design on the bases.

Now THAT'S the right look for a Goauld corridor wall!

Imagine the pattern on those bases as the basis for a wall template!

What do you think of that idea?

Re rules

Have a look at FUBAR link – the base rules are a page and the Stargate add-on is a page. They also have a VSF version based on the British finding the gate in 1895!

artslave…I think I saw your miniatures game at Origins several years ago. It was on a large table with an elaborate diorama. There was a chart with game mechanics, and was based somewhat on AEG?

If this is you, can you email me…I'd like to kow how you adapted AEG roleplaying rules to what was played at Origins.
