I know there were lots of good revierws on TMP for the first volume, which I also thoroughly enjoyed.

But the second volume has been out for a good month now, and I have not seen a TMP review.

I intend on picking it up at one of the first shows of the year – it seems exactly the sort of book one should get from a hobby-supporting trader at a show, irrespective of how big a discount Amazon offers.

I just wondered whether any one has a specific review of it yet.

not yet but James R Arnold has written two superb books

"CRISIS ON THE DANUBE " and "NAPOLEONS CONQUERS AUSTRIA"

which covers the complete 1809 experience in great depth

but as i loved "with eagles to glory " i will probably give

in and bu em both

what was volume one like Keraunos

Both are fantastic a wargamers dream, detailed accounts of most of the encounters, great obs, decent maps and best of all we will get three indepth volumes on the 1809 campaign.

Well I am only halfway through book1, book 2 is sat waiting and I see no reason it shouldn't be as good. His other book, with the eagles to glory, is also excellent.

I'm till awaiting my vol2…ordered from Barnes & Nobles; but last I heard they had not received it yet.

I'm still waiting on my order for vol 2 from Amazon. If it is anything like his other books it will be superb.

Me neither and I've tried to keep an eye out for it.
I guess I should have used my good eye.

I thoroughly enjoyed volume one.

As a callow youth, I picked up a distaste for the Austrians, mostly, I think, because of the Austrian player in our club who had given his figures an even worse paint job than my Prussians (the plastics days, of course), so I have never taken an interest to the 1809 cmapaign.

Despite this irrational prejudice, I impulse brought volume one, and must say it struck me greatly.

Am quite looking forward to volume two now.

Thanks to all

I've read Vol 1 and currently reading Vol 2. Bring on Vol 3.

It realy is a sterling read. Better then Vol 1 and thats saying somthing. It covers both sides quite evenly and again goes in to detail covering all the minor engagements as well as the major ones. The are the OOBs at the back of the book and maps throughout.

I like the detail covering the armies on the march. One simple bit that stuck with me is how one french battalion carried candles at night to illuminate the way. It's easy to forget how dark it must have been.

Just when I had decided to curtail my book purchases for a while this comes along (I wasn't even aware it had been released).

Oh well, my order has gone in.

As someone new to the era in general but very interested in 1809 (France vs Austria IS the Napoleonic era IMHO) – would these volumes be worth it?

I have Hertouille's (I know I am misspelling that!) book for Wagram and a couple Osprey books (for OOB's and uniforms). Is Thunder on the Danube a natural next step or quantum leap forward?

nsolomon9906 Jan 2009 3:46 p.m. PST

wildwolf45 – I too find the 1809 Campaign the most interesting of the period. These 2 volumes with a 3rd to come later this year are truly superb accounts of this Campaign. I'm halfway through Vol 2 and agree it's at least as good as Vol 1.

James Arnold's 2 Vol set published a decade ago are also excellent but arguably let down by the poor maps. Notably Arnold's latest work on the 1807 Campaign includes really excellent maps and these lift the whole work.

GJM FIGURINES06 Jan 2009 4:01 p.m. PST

i agree with nsolomon99……….and as i havnt read Gills
new brace on 1809 i reckon Arnolds two books are worth
getting for the sheer amount of detail/ also i enjoyed Pertre and the archduke charles though its seems a bit basic
now,but has bags of charm and i managed to follow the basic
maps. with Bowdens book these form a resonable start to a
fasinating campaign. the French Cavalry by Johnson is also
usefull though its more of a general spread. but super
detailed on aspern-essling and wagram
