Steve Saleh has sculpted a new range of 28mm Successor Empire period miniatures to be distributed by Gripping Beast. I had the pleasure to paint one up for viewing, they are very spiffy and fit perfectly with Foundry and other 28mm figures of the period. Look for more details about this upcoming range in the future! picture

Wow. Greaves 'n' ever'thing. You can tell Jeff is smiling. Now with WAB poised to jump the shark (again), what rules are you leaning towards to play Successors, O Jeffus? Allen |

"Best not to abate one's breathing, while waiting." Just borrow a hit from time to time off the oxygen tank that's keeping WAB alive. Allen |

Lovely looking figures and I like doing business with the guys at GB – tempted to pick up some of these as opposition for my Republican Romans. However, I know I'm revealing my ignorance here, but what are the essential differences in kit between "Successor" phalangites and figures that could be used in Alexander's armies? |

"However, I know I'm revealing my ignorance here, but what are the essential differences in kit between "Successor" phalangites and figures that could be used in Alexander's armies?" I was wondering that, too. I believe the helmet is characteristic of the Successors, but I don't know more than that; perhaps JJ or Allen could advise on the source on which the uniforms are based, please? The figures look like they will match nicely with one of Saleh's Foundry phalangites from the old 12 packs, which has a similar helmet. Nice that Saleh is with GB, I always find them prompt and friendly. Simon |

Thanks Allen, so that is presumably a "Sidon or Ascalon style helmet". I had better borrow my mate's Montverts. Simon |

Nice. I don't suppose there's any kind of release schedule? List of what is coming? |

"However, I know I'm revealing my ignorance here, but what are the essential differences in kit between "Successor" phalangites and figures that could be used in Alexander's armies?" ------> This figure is based on the reliefs from the tomb of Lyson and Kallikles, which depicts Antigonid soldiers. The higher waisted leather or linen linothorax is often identified as one thing that separates later phalangites from earlier varieties. Duncan Head first identified this connection in his landmark "Armies and Enemies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars", WRG publication.
Also this figure has an ascalon style helmet which is commonly shown in our surviving sources of Antigonid soldiers. The red color is based on the tomb art above. Antigonid armies had three distinct phalangite regiments, guards (also confusingly called peltasts), bronze shields and white shields. I've followed the shield pattern in bronze from the Lyson and Kallikles tomb
it isn't very easy to paint :) link This figure also has greaves, something that many figures leave off (hence Allen's snide-diddly-dallying). Surviving Antigonid writtne documents detail phalangite equipment including greaves, as well as the clear depiction on the tomb above. Generally Successor armies are noted as being lavishly equipped by Roman sources, this may mean a number of things
one, they were gaudy and lavishly equipped, or two, Romans were plain and dull compared to them
.or three they were uniformed and the Romans were less interested in that in this period, or a combination of all these things. JJ |

" I don't suppose there's any kind of release schedule? List of what is coming?" Some details were posted on the WABList Yahoo group. I'll let the responsible individuals repost them here. Snide-diddly Allen |

I had wanted to do a successor army in 28 but the lack of the published Successor WAB supplement put a stop to that and also the lack of decent multiple posed figures. Now I am putting together a successor army in 15mm for FoG and I think I will never do one in 28mm. Plus more people are playing ancients in 15mm using FoG then there is for 28mm WAB. I do still look forward to the Successor book when that eventually gets published. |

Nice paint job as usual. The size comparison is very handy and it appears that the GB range are larger than say their Carthaginians? Noticed on the WAB Forum that 'First Corps' is also bringing out their Successor Range – phalangites, thureophoroi and thorakitaes. Illustrations of those released to-date on the Kingmaker site (they now have Curtney's and First Corps as well). Empire is also releasing their range sometime in 09. So the Successor General will be very spoiled for choice – not forgetting others already released from A&A, Crusader, Essex among others. Cheers Garry |

Thanks for that Jeff. I can see the difference now – had a look at Duncan Head's book last night as well and can see that the high-waisted linothorax marks a bit of a change, as well as the helmet. |

Yes! Finally! :D (Cheers and jumps up and down in excitement. Opens a bottle of champagne to celebrate). Once Gripping Beast start releasing their unofficial official figure ranges to support the next WAB Supplement, said Supplement is rarely far behind. After so many years, the wait is finally almost over. Almost. The WAB Successors Supplement is actually coming! Well, soon, anyway. :D Thank you! Brilliant job Jeff, in every which way. :D I am looking forward to reading your work with very eager anticipation (gee, you think?). And to Steve Saleh and Gripping Beast also, thank you and good job. :) |

Further to the above – Gripping Beast has now added details of the range along with some shots of a selection of masters. Have a look on their site. There goes the budget! |

sigh. They are a must-have. |

Higly detailed figure and very good paint job indeed. Looking at what they are planning to release (see Gripping Beast's site), the rang looks very promising. I'm curious for the Seleucid cataphracts. I'm waiting for good, realistic Seleucid cataphracts. Hope they are sculpted somehow like the cataphract figure(2 great flaps covering the legs and a part of the belly?) depicted in the Montvert book. Can't wait to see them Philipus |

Post Cold Steel at The Beast Darren gave me a handfull to paint up. They are really lovely sculpts (as you would expect from Steve Saleh). All the poses are very natural and dynamic. Well, enough said, you can see the pics on my website here: link Hope that you enjoy them. Cheers, Darrell. |
