While clearing my driveway I noted that a lot of my birch trees are laden with snow and bend down very close to the ground. This makes those small branches very accessible.

On my trees there are still a lot of those seed pod things (not sure what you call em). If you crumble these up they turn into leaf litter (a nice effect on 25mm bases and if you crunch it up some, works for 15mm too.

Well spent about 15 minutes with my pruners and cut several small thin branches. The seed pods were crumbled and placed on an old cookie sheet and toasted for about 15 min to dry them out. Looks pretty good.

The smaller twigs and such will be used to make facines for my WWI tanks.

The larger twigs are going to find use as logs in my Great Gaul Alesia project.

The twigs / branches are all pretty flexible right now but (it being winter) not much sap in them. I deal for shaping right now. Should hold those shapes when they dry.

Might want to take a look outside right about now. Seems like a great time to do a little 'organic' terrain acquisition.

Once the sap starts running, tap them and make beer.

Birch Beer. It's a wonder the Indians didn't think of that.

Hmmm, never thought of using the birch seeds for anything in modelling.

Around here all you need to collect them is to leave your window open for a few hours on a windy day in late summer, and then sweep the mass of the seeds from the floor.

The idea of leaf litter would look interesting for a forest-themed force – say, a bunch of rangers or wood elves skulking in the bushes.
