Parachute infantry landing on top of Fallschirmjaegers, or vice versa, random reingforcements of God knows what…
This battle seems like it would be a hoot to game.

Has anyone done it?

Somebody (Buck Surdu?) ran it yonks ago at the East cons. Hopefully someone who played in those will chime in.

While reading D'Este's account, I gave a great deal of thought as to how one might game it. I think it could be really fun as long as the players accepted a) a lot of GM involvement and b) not having exact knowledge of friendly units and their positions.

I think you could really legitimately randomize everything. So, if someone showed up knowing when some unit arrived, it would do him no good.

Google "Primosole Bridge scenarios". It's been done. A lot.

Years before I joined the group, my gaming fellows ran a double blind WWII skirmish with a twist – each player came up separately and could only see what he could see or what he knew from some other intel (radio commo, for example). That way, it was all a guess if the action was going according to plan or not.

Double blind takes time and something like this would really take a while, but would be worth it in the end from the limited knowledge. Some people don't like that limited knowledge though – too used to gamer's omniscience. I have to admit, it is daunting looking at an empty battlefield and laying out a plan based on the terrain and your best guess. Much easier fighting an opponent you can see! :oP

John, if you're really considering doing that, PM me.

I used to run a skirmish level game called 'We Have Met
the Enemy and He is Us'. I ran it at H'con and CW
probably 20 and 15 or so years ago. Your basic British
para's versus Fallschirmjaeger, dropping into the same
area at close to the same time. Also ran it as a
'club' game at our local cons several times.

Be glad to share details, especially the pre-game brief,
designed to instill uncertainty in the players.

This is one I've thuoght aboiut a few times and never got around to it. The campaign leading up to it would make an interesting operational scenario, a sort of mini Market Garden but with commando landings too.

Played the Rapid Fire version by Mark Piper, it was a good fun game

Played the Advanced Squad Leader version of it--pretty good mini-campaign.

I did a scenario of the last stage (final British attack on the Fallschirmjaegers) for Command Decision:Test of Battle at Little Wars last year. It made for a good game.
