So if some of the new plastoics are being designed in a computer, are we going to see them scan, say, a German helmet and drop it onto the picture?

or get someone dressed in all the right stuff and get scanned, and instant figure! ( well OK with some touch ups)

or is the need to mess with the scale, making guns thicker or shorter, or whatever going to prevent this?

"…are we going to see them scan, say, a German helmet and drop it onto the picture?"

That might give us the first properly-sculpted one!

"…or get someone dressed in all the right stuff and get scanned, and instant figure!"

You mean, like re-enactors? Wouldn't work: people already complain about unrealistic proportions.

It's a great idea for the vanity market. Every TMP subscriber could have their own figure of the OFM

Tom Reed05 Jan 2009 10:39 a.m. PST

The only place that I've seen this done is with action figures. Wrestling figures in particular.

Wombling Free05 Jan 2009 10:39 a.m. PST

Excellent idea. I shall be Ruarigh inn digri, plump Viking warrior.

Fifty405 Jan 2009 10:42 a.m. PST

You can do it now -- scanning can be a little pricey though!

Best,

Something really frightening is The Emily Project from ImageMetrics:
link

You don't realize until the end of the short video that the girl who is talking in the video has been scanned and they are manipulating her facial features to match the audio. It wouldn't surprise me if in the future newscasts, special reports, series, etc. are completely done this way with a "celebrity" being paid for their initial scan, but these companies doing everything else.

I'm sure that this technology will make itself into the gaming market at some point.

Fifty405 Jan 2009 10:43 a.m. PST

More pricey, however, is the R&D we've put into our time machine. See, I was thinking, we just go back in time, scan in an Early Imperial Legionary and VOILA – instantly perfect proportions, historical authenticity, etc.

We think we have another couple weeks to figure out this time machine thingy though.

;-)

Nope. Somebody would be whining about the stumpy legs.

I don't even want to think about the nude Thebans…

Scanners aren't cheap, and there's going to be post-processing to do, but the possibility is getting closer every day.

Griefbringer05 Jan 2009 10:59 a.m. PST

Notice that with the 3D-printers out there, you would also be able to print out just a single copy of the scanned image.

So you could dress up as a Napoleonic infantry-man, walk into a 3D-scan-and-print-shop, have them place you in the scanner, and then print out a model of you in that very same Napoleonic gear. Would not be cheap though.

Like a lady before her wedding, I'd better start dieting now for my image scan. Wait for the nycjadie figure, coming to a webstore near you.

The trick is to find someone who already has a scanner, but with a lot of down time. In this economy, that might not be all that difficult.
Rent it in place for your scan, but make sure you have software compatibility!

Will it be in a proper Zardoz outfit?

go take a look at the old 80's film LOOKER, which is well worth watching for Susan Dey ALONE!

They scan in women, then kill them so they can use their images without having to deal with the actual person.

In "Looker", Susan Dey blows…

Allen, I don't remember that scene.

I don't think jgawne is talking about her acting skills.

aecurtis Fezian05 Jan 2009 12:43 p.m. PST

Yes, but I don't think Bill would appreciate having links posted to the clip you probably have in mind.

Easy enough to find, though…

Well not with Susan Dey, but given the topic, the movie and computer technology it could be done. Ironic or a bit chilling?

heh… well, some of us are more "realistically proportioned" than others. I do British War of 1812 and WW2 and I am 5'7" / 140lbs.

Cheers

I said many years ago that soon video will no longer be accepted as evidence in court. Too easy to doctor.

That action figure needs an additional 100 lbs.

So wehrmacht: if you were into Roman re-enacting, you'd be the guy on the left, then?

By the way, Tony, in case you were going to ask me about Picts at some point--here ya go:

picture

This one here provides accurate period documentation for soooo much--Pict face markings, Late Roman gimp masks, the cricket bat swords that Hasslefriesian likes so much, ski caps of antiquity, complete with product placement…

For about $200 USD for the software, a laser level, and a videocamera, you can do it yourself…

The detail on a lifesized figure scaled down to 28mm would be too fine.
Have a look at the figures you like to paint, just how thick is the detail?
