Comments or corrections?

raducci05 Jan 2009 3:17 a.m. PST

I notice you took flak for correcting someones grammar in another thread.
I think it is very nice of you to help those who dont speak English as their first language.
At least in my case please offer any advice you think I need.

Grizwald05 Jan 2009 3:34 a.m. PST

Thanks for your kind words Raducci. Your English is very good!

We all make spelling mistakes, at one time or another, it would help though if you could spell check before we posted…

Add a spell checker to your browser then.

My spelling mistake was not because of lack of knowledge about English, but by the fact that my fingers some time type faster then my brain works

Some people are dyslexic and will use the incorrect word spelt correctly.
Some people just make mistakes.

If I want to correct someone because I think they would want to be informed I will PM them if possible to avoid any possible embarrassment.

Generally speaking though I am sure people understand everything that is posted on here, spelt correctly or not.

Gunfreak is not a supporting member so that option was not available.

"My spelling mistake was not because of lack of knowledge about English, but by the fact that my fingers some time type faster then my brain works"

I assumed some lack of knowledge because the particular word was spelled the same incorrect way in several posts on different threads. My apologies if that was not the case.

Anyway, that is what the edit feature is for.

I've been reading miliatry history and playing wargames long enough to know how to spell division.
Infact all my reading about military history is in English, so I realy don't know what the Norwegian words are for alot of the military structures ect.

"I've been reading miliatry history and playing wargames long enough to know how to spell division."

Fair enough. It was the consistency of the error that puzzled me. I really do recommend the use of the edit feature though to correct run of the mill spelling mistakes etc. In fact, you can do a lot worse than using a spell checker (e.g. the add on for Firefox).

Jeremy Sutcliffe05 Jan 2009 6:04 p.m. PST

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't recommend the use of a spell checker to anyone whose first language isn't English unless they were highly proficient in its use.

I must admit that I find the recently introduced edit facility helpful. If one isn't a trained typist, it is very easy to suffer from dyslexic fingers.

But, at the end of the day, it's the effectiveness of the communication that matters and not the pedantry about the English.

"But, at the end of the day, it's the effectiveness of the communication that matters and not the pedantry about the English."
Yes and no Jeremy.
You are a proficient writer of English.
If someone politely corrects my expression I would happily accept the opportunity to improve myself.
This isnt the place for such a discussion of course but I want to again thank Mike for his kind efforts.

Enough. Everybody writes in Latin from now on.

Look, the problem is this.

Boadicea was struggling with Caesar's "Gallic Wars" and, as she wasn't fluent in Latin, she ran "Veni. Vidi. Vici" through a spell checker and decided that he'd described the British as "Weeny, weedy and weaky."

The rest is history.

(Raducci,
I'd never correct a "friend" in public but when I was a local politician I'd revel in humiliating an opponent. However, as I'm struggling a bit with my Italian course perhaps a quid quo pro is possible. Is that Latin enough for billsfan?)

Long live our society,

from a student drinking song.

Actually, I have a problem with short term memory and have a horrible time learning lanugages. I would rather spend time in the dentist chair rather than study latin. My wife loves it and studies it for fun. And you think I'm weird????

Correctomundo!

It is titled "Gaudeamus Igiture" and is said to date from at least the 13th century.

I thought the selected Latin words fit well as a hope for TMP Napoleonic Forums.
