"Hobbit release is 2012 according to the-hobbit-movie.com " Word about mid last year was that the movie wasn't going to happen because the studio failed to pay the Tolkien estate for the LOTR movies. Shame because Del Toro was the last director I know of tag to make it. |

Disney has also backed out ot "Voyage of the Dawn Treader," which is the only Narnia book I really wanted to see adapted with modern CGI. Hope it still happens. |

I'm not 100% sure we'll see "The Hobbit" or many other big budget adaptations of fantasy books on screen until the global economic outlook is a bit brighter. Filmmakers and producers need financing and credit too, and appear to be finding it hard to come by. This is a pity, as I believe they'd do very well. |

That's interesting since in the States at least, movie ticket sales are up drastically because it is a far cheaper form of entertainment than sporting events, trips, etc

For what it's worth, Viggo Mortensen recently said in an interview that Del Toro was making it in Mexico now. |

Films (movies) did well during the great depression. The Hobbit film might be a better place to put your money than elsewhere. |

" "Films (movies) did well during the great depression. The Hobbit film might be a better place to put your money than elsewhere." Yes – I am well aware of both of those points. But you still need to GET the money first before putting it into these pojects. That's the problem. The fact that there has been a good deal of legal wrangling between Tolkien Enterprises/ Saul Zaentz/ New Line/ my cat over rights and profits from the first LOTR project will make any investor/ backer/ producer much more cautious, particularly in the current financial climate. Middle Earth is now and established "franchise" or "brand". Make a Hobbit film and yes – you'll get millions of viewers. However, like the property market or anything else, the value that's now placed on the rights to make LOTR films has shot up, making the film(s) a much more expensive proposition than they would have been pre-2000. Add in a near-certainty of future legal actions in relation to rights/profit-sharing, the fact that Peter Jackson will not be directing and the difficulty in sourcing millions in credit these das, and you might begin to see why I doubt this will happen in the relatively near future. And yes – movie attendances always go up during times of economic turbulence. "The Hobbit" would be a perfect project, but simply may currently be considered too expensive to make and bearing too much future risk for those involved. |

Wow. I guess I'd buy the new and used version from $29.99 USD then. |
