"Into line!" Captain John Girling barked to his men. The soldiers wheeled into extended formation and, on Captain Girling's order, commenced their charge, a company of men, mounted on horses, in what was probably the last cavalry charge to be led by a British officer

The Cheshire Yeomanery fought on horse back in WW2, I am not sure they made a formal charge. |

I have an ASL scenario from one of the third-party distributors that states the last British cavalry charge was in WW@ vs. the Japanese. Will have to dig it out and post the details here. |

Black Tower – the Cheshire Yeomanry were 30 seconds away from making the last charge in 1941, against the old enemy; the French. This time it was to be Vichy French in Syria. Indeed the order had been given the squadron mounted up, and then the counter order came in just seconds before they were on their way. As a Northwich lad it saddens me that they didn't quite make it. Ho hum. Rich |

I did particularly like the errudite quote in the article: "An avid follower of today's news, Mr Girling described attempts to bring democracy to Afghanistan as " " and said that there would be no end to the region's problems until the Kashmir dispute was resolved." Shame no b.ugger asked the old India hands their opinion before they waded in; but of course, how foolish of me, history is merely an inconvenient subject still on the school curriculum

>> What, and have to read up on our nasty, evil colonial past? Oh dear me, noooo
. ;^)) <<The last full regimental cavalry charge was at the Battle of Omdurman--With a young Mr WS Churchill in attendance
..>> Weren't there several in WWI? During the Retreat to Mons, I thought an entire brigade charged over fields that turned out to be criss-crossed with barbed-wire fences. |

A combined force of 3 squadrons from the Warwickshire and Worcestershire Yeomanry Regiments conducted a classic cavalry charge at Huj, Palestine on 8th November 1917. They charged against several deployed batteries of Turkish artillery and supporting HMGs. Despite heavy losses to both horses and riders the attack was pressed home. The Turkish gunners bravely standing their ground until the gun line was over run by the Yeomanry. A total of 11 guns and 4 HMGs were captured along with 70 Turks. The Cavalry suffered 35 killed, 70 wounded and lost over 120 horses. |
