I have been reading Ian Fletchers book Waters Of Oblivion about the failed British invasion of the South American Spanish colony and am thinking how best to game it in 28mm, can anyone recommend to me the ideal rules, figures etc
I was thinking Eagle Figures/Perry Miniatures for the colonial Spanish and then poss Old Glory for the British..? Thanks, Geoff |

Wargames Illustrated No.89 has a "Rio de la Plata, 1807 Matrix Game" that might help you. What level do you prefer games played at--skirmish, battalion/brigade, divisional or grand tactical? |

I always wondered why the British invaded Argentina in 1807? |

Well taking over the Rio Plata area would give the British a base from which to control the waters round Cape Horn. The take over of the Falkands in the 1830's was a rather poor substitute – even if it proved vital in 1914. It would also be another blow against the crumbling Spanish Empie at a time it was allied to Napoleon. What the British invasion did do was push the Argentine closer to independence from Spain with the first steps being taken in 1810 before the final independence in 1816. This success also inspries the rest of South AMeica to complete the break in the late teens and early 20's. |

always wondered why the British invaded Argentina in 1807? I guess for thesame reson they attacked Manila in the SYW. Because it is there. |

Didn't it have something to do with a British Admiral spotting a chance to make some money? |

I think an old issue of Practical Wargamer had a Rio de la Plata scenario |

Lots of skirmish gaming to be done.. but most of the big actions were assualts on towns and street fights.. I know alot of the fighting broke down into company and half battalions sized affairs, with each column not really knowing how the others were fairing. These tyoe of action, I reckon, are dificult to put into "big games".. having said that the Orders of battle for the British and Spanish regulars are quite small and managable
wargames illustrated had an article about Whitelockes failed assualt on Buenos Aries with a full army list.. off the top of my head I can remember it included.. 45th (faired quite well and one of the few battalions still fighting at the end, thou its colonel and grenadier company were captured trying to reach Craufords position) 71st 38th (I have read of a number of men being killed in this regiment while trying to take gold coins spilled in a street, im not sure if this is an idication of indisipline in this corps at this time or not) 40th 88th 95th and a light dragoon regiment, maybe the 14th. |

The latest issue of "Strategy & Tactics" #254 has an article discussing the British invasion. |
