Realy made me want to start work on my Guilfords court house project again. but I want to get better at painting 28mm. I found the uniforms hard to paint well with my skills.

So untill I get better at 28mm I'm not going to paint them

Greenryth18 Dec 2008 9:56 a.m. PST

Gunfreak, painting well is just techniques. I have taught people that have never painted before to paint to nearly my standard in a year!!! I always black undercoat as it is the most forgiving medium. Only use three colours per base colour you want and layer from light to dark useing those three colours in stages. Its as simple as that!!

pancerni18 Dec 2008 11:31 a.m. PST

You may want to reconsider your use of the Lee's Legion flag…that is not the flag they carried…I'm not sure where you got that but I've never seen it before. The figures look great.

Fantastic work, and I love the Curassier officer – I think he looks better than the AWI… just :-)

Greenryth18 Dec 2008 2:05 p.m. PST

I agree..I have put more work into the French and I think you will see that once they have been posted. I have learnt a lot of new techniques over the years and have used them to better effect.

Gunfreak18 Dec 2008 2:12 p.m. PST

I saw you had the same general as me.

So I decided to paint mine up and taking my time with it and see were it lead.

The face turned out Bleeped text, but the rest is ok, the wash is a little strong

I think it looks fine Gunfreak. I would leave a little bit more black on the model as it is the black that gives the definition. You dont leave mcu black between the colours. If you dont want to leave black I would undercoat in white instead as the colour come up a little brighter. Your brush control and detail look good, its just a case of perfecting the technique. Sacha Herm's DVD is a good starting point.

The Lee's Dragoon Guidon was difficult to find but I found a reference to it here:

Don Johnson18 Dec 2008 8:55 p.m. PST

Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your collection with others. It's always great to see AWI figures painted and presented well – for me, it never gets old! I'll be looking forward to future posts.

pancerni19 Dec 2008 7:13 a.m. PST

Greenryth,

I'm certainly not an expert on AWI flags but I have to question the claim of the Sons of the Revolution about the Lee's Legion flag, if for no other reason than the use of the abreviation "U.S." suggesting the use of the phrase United States. I have researched the Guilford Courthouse battle/campaign and have never come across any reference to this flag. The use of the U.S.seems premature for 1781. This may a case similar to the "Guilford Flag" claim…it is actually a flag from a later period, probably 1812.

Nice looking blog site and figures.

377CSG20 Dec 2008 4:12 a.m. PST

That face has got character – I like it and nice paint job.

Gunfreak20 Dec 2008 5:02 a.m. PST

Which Ink/shade do you use?

Greenryth20 Dec 2008 8:18 a.m. PST

I normally dont ink much Gunfreak I normally layer my models. I use inks on furs, heavy cloth with folds and on horses. Normally I use GW's Dark flesh for faces, I then layer on Tallarn flesh from their foundation range. I then use elf flesh or light flesh tp highlight. I normally only layer three times on my wargaming models. Some of my more intricate or character pieces from other colletions I have may have up to eight layers.

Basilhare20 Dec 2008 2:56 p.m. PST

How big are your bases?

Greenryth21 Dec 2008 12:08 p.m. PST

standard size for BG. I normally base infantry four to a base with a frontage of 36mm and a depth of 50mm.

Greenryth – I've left a message for you regarding next weekend; you'll need to find an extra player. I did try to get the rules author to come along, but he's snowed under with work at the moment and may well be out of the UK (he does wish you all the best and looks forward to the photos of the game being posted).

Knockman23 Feb 2009 4:57 a.m. PST

Greeny – have to get there first! :o) Will update you on travel plans sometime soon….

Prinz Geoffrey23 Feb 2009 5:56 a.m. PST

Nice looking figures, well painted and animated. I like your non-uniform look.

Greenryth25 Feb 2009 7:50 a.m. PST

Thanks Prinz…Supercillius I'm having problems with my phone at the moment as I get no signal in my new house (bloody Vodafone!!). Its unfortunate that our additinal general cannot make it but I hope you will be able to attend. We will be starting in the AM a Bighton Hall as last time. I would appreciate it if you could bring your small contingent of troops along to fill in any gaps. If you are around we will be setting up on Friday night and then adjourning for a curry in Alresford. You re most welcome. If not I'll see you on Saturday. I will give you a call before hand.

Supercilius Maximus25 Feb 2009 9:18 a.m. PST

Actually, my message was that I couldn't make it either, as my wife is unwell and is going into hospital on Monday for a small op. Sorry – hope you have enough time to find a replacement.

Knockman25 Feb 2009 9:29 a.m. PST

Super-Max, that's a shame, was looking forward to meeting up again, and whether Mini-Max and his demon dice-rolling was going to knock us all for 6s again. Best wishes for your wife and hope all goes well for Monday.

Greeny – you should have e-mail now about the sorted travel plans.

Greenryth25 Feb 2009 10:35 a.m. PST

Real shame… theres always next time. Pass on my regards to your wife.

Supercilius Maximus26 Feb 2009 9:57 a.m. PST

Thanks for the kind thoughts, guys. Yes, No.2 son has been practising with his "special" dice all weel…..

Definitely next time.

IsThereASix29 Mar 2009 11:14 a.m. PST

You have done a fantastic job with your AWI collection and your battle report! Very inspirational for me because I'm ready to start painting my AWI 25mm collection. One question on the buildings pictured on your Battle of Germantown report – Where did you find those buildings?!? I am struggling to find buildings for this period.
Thanks again for sharing,
Mike

Greenryth01 Apr 2009 9:11 a.m. PST

Sorry too much lead for coming back to you so slowly. The buildings were all scratch built be myself apart from one or two of them. Chew house was a big effort with over 2000 individual tiles to stick on!!! I have my own professional painting and terrain building business so if you ever want any thing made or would like me to give you some ideas on how to do it just send me an email at greenryth@gmail.com. I'd be happy to help.
