Are there any good studies out there in English on the struggle between the the Guelphs & Ghibbelines. I'd like something in English for choice.

TIA

I'm not sure anyone understands it enough to write a BOOK on IT. Rather, it weaves its way through medieval politics and seems to confuse everybody. Nothing could be murkier than "Italian" politics, or any politics that they get involved in. link Wiki looks like a good place to start….

Runciman's 'Sicilian Vespers' is a good read for the second half of the 13th century. It is by no means only about the war of that name. It does concentrate on Charles of Anjou but explains the situation which brought him to Sicily as well.

If you want more of a social study then one of the books by Waley would give a grounding.

There's a semi-decent primer in Sir Charles Oman's The Art of War in the Middle Ages.

Hi,
I found a book which covers more of Frederick II's time in Syria and Cyprus.

"The Wars of Frederick II Against the Ibelins in Syria and Cyprus", by Philip de Novare

Not really Guelph and Ghibbeline.

This one has quite a bit though.

"The Italian Crusades – The Papal-Angevin Alliance and the Christian Lay Powers, 1254-1343", by Norman Housley

I haven't had a chance to look at this one, but it covers a lot.

Hopefully you will be able to link to this one.

A general history of those wars? I can't find one in italian, you can try with books about specific figures like Frederick I "Barbarossa", Frederick II, Ezzelino da Romano or histories of italian city states.

In english there are only general overviews:

Dont't forget he Osprey books: Italian Medieval Armies 1000-1300 & Italian Militiaman 1260-1392

With google books I found this history of Florence, first volume covers the medieval period in detail:

At least there are a handful of books about some battles with both italian/english text and plates.
Montaperti

Montaperti, Campaldino and what seems a general overview, all by Roberto Marchionni:
