Lads,
I`ve just got into this game with my partners Son. The Zor-Maxim comes with a rectangular block of plastic. Can anyone tell me what it`s for?

Scale Creep Miniatures16 Dec 2008 5:44 a.m. PST

Is it the big black square base in this pic?

It's just a weight to stop people guessing what's in the pack.

PygmaelionAgain16 Dec 2008 6:57 a.m. PST

I've not witnessed this firsthand, but… seriously?

A block of plastic?

They couldn't pack him with… Oh… an extra die or something? I'm not a packaging expert or a "save the PVC Trees!" guy, but Monsterpocalypse handily defeated Heroclix as "Most volume in a booster pack taken up by chaff".

That is, of course, unless you have need of prepackaged air.

Goober16 Dec 2008 7:21 a.m. PST

is it collectable air?

Scale Creep Miniatures16 Dec 2008 8:12 a.m. PST

I got a box full of very rare air indeed…

The ballast block doesn't work very well, since it ends up at one end of the box and throws the weight distribution off center. This makes it fairly obvious that a ballast block in included, and since that is true for less than a third of the monsters…

Monsterpocalypse handily defeated Heroclix as "Most volume in a booster pack taken up by chaff".

Blame the very large monster base.

It's not a giant gelatinous cube that they forgot to include stats for?

Space Monkey16 Dec 2008 1:00 p.m. PST

I'm thinking it could be one of the Monolith Monsters:

oh, cmon chaps! You KNOW things like THAT never go 'un-used' by us gamer/kitbasher types…(I LIKE the 'Gelatinous cube' idea…since it's cheaper than the D&D one that way)…and besides…no doubt it will become EXTREMELY valuable and 'collectible' when they figure out it doesn't work the way they thought and it becomes 'discontinued'/no longer available!!!

You gotta love THAT…(and the fact we'll start seeing them for sale on EBAY as 'Gelatinous Cubes/Monolith monsters' or 'customized heroclix/heroquest etc' monsters with custom cards….

it beats carboard inserts all to snotlings!!!!

btw has anybody seen/heard more about the I 'chomp' NYC booster series in March????

as in WHAT Critters might be in it???

Slishfully,
Sgt DWW-btod

Farstar16 Dec 2008 2:30 p.m. PST

The monsters in I Chomp NY are all shown in concept artwork in the Rise Strategy Guide, and a few of the Units are shown in the factions sections as previews.

Ballast? surely not. It doesn`t weigh that much.

It`s just a rectangular block of opaque plastic about 30mm x 15mm x 10mm in it`s own polythene bag. I`ve had 2 Zor-Maxims now and each had one packed with it. No indication in the rules as to any gaming use for it.

When I first saw it I thought some sort of "force wall" that the Zor-Maxim could generate, but nothing is written down anywhere.

Here's your answer, just go to the source…

'just throw it away'

Something about that kind of bugs me…
why not at least make it look like something useable, a building or something… rather than leaving it as a waste product.

Farstar17 Dec 2008 11:51 a.m. PST

The Zors and Deimos-9 are the ones you'll find a ballast block with most often.

I intend to make something of mine at some point, but it may take a while to get enough.

Ivan DBA17 Dec 2008 2:18 p.m. PST

That is lame and wasteful of them. How hard would it have been to include a plastic building of roughly the same size & weight?

Farstar17 Dec 2008 3:04 p.m. PST

Because the buildings are in a different booster? Not trivial.

Space Monkey17 Dec 2008 5:36 p.m. PST

The real lameness is the whole 'collectible' thing…
It doesn't matter if there are different boosters for buildings… they'd just need one standard ballast building for the monster packages.

Peanutbreath18 Dec 2008 5:30 a.m. PST

Well I`m glad that`s solved anyway. It`s been buggung me for days now. Thanks for the link, Riverbluff.

I just avoided this whole controversy, and the collectible issue as well by ordering from Popular Collections. link An entire force can be had for about 40 bucks, which is a bargain for most games in my book. The game is so damn good that I got past the CMG thing very easily even before I discovered the online stores that take all the "chance" out of purchasing models. I still buy a booster every now and then, though, just for the fun of it.
