Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has wargamed the Battle of Worringen? If so what rules? There's a ton of info on the battle, and should be pretty easy to set up, providing you have the figures, etc.

I have tons of heraldry for the battle so that's a plus.

I ran across a map that should be pretty easy to replicate.

Some awesome pics on that page! Wish I had a setup like that to play a game on! Thanks for the link.

Definitely a feast for the eyes!

Yes. I will scan my notes on Worringen and post them for yous all. Hang on….

Silly me, I already scanned this ages ago. And now I remember someone else asked about this battle. Here it is anyway: picture

That is some serious modelling there, I am impressed. My gaming has always concentrated on lean and representative terrain: that, and I am cheap: a felt strip for a road or stream beats 3D, painting, flocking, and storing. To each his own.

Our maps seem to be harmonious, which is always good….

Thanks Doug,
Do you know of any "army list" for this battle or c.1288 german army list for a 15mm or 25mm battle?

On that note, what figures would best represent this time frame? Maybe the Mirliton miniatures?

Thanks.

Minis, I have no idea (haven't bought and painted anything new in ages). Armies lists: we have 'em, and I did use the "French and German Armies 1150 to 1300 AD" list to get the troop mix:

Up to 40% cavalry and mercenaries:
up to 50% light infantry; crossbow 2 or 3 and sword
(crossbow 3 limited to 1/4). Morale: 00-39=D,
40-89=C, 90-99=B
up to 50% medium and heavy infantry; pike and sword;
morale as above
up to 50% light and medium cavalry; lance and sword.
Morale: 00-29=D, 30-89=C, 90-99=B
up to 70% heavy cavalry; lance and sword. Morale:
00-19=D, 20-69=C, 70-99=B;
REQUIRED UNIT
up to 10% cataphract cavalry; as above

*Up to 85% feudal infantry:
up to 60% unarmored infantry; levy with assorted melee
weapons and 1/4 bow 1 or sling. Morale class D
up to 10% unarmored infantry; bow 2 and sword.
Morale: 00-69=D, 70-99=C
up to 10% light infantry; crossbow 2 and sword; morale
as above
up to 40% light infantry; spear and sword. Morale:
00-49=D, 50-89=C, 90-99=B
up to 20% medium infantry; as above
up to 5% heavy infantry; as above

That might be useful to you.

A real feast for the eyes. You and your compatriots should be very proud of your war games expertise

Mirliton are exactly the right period for this.

You can even get paper shield covers if you don't want to paint your own.

Thanks. I noticed on the site, that there aren't any pictures for the flags (25mm). When I look at the description it seems they are only mentioning two individuals.

ZW003 (1 Reinald von Geldem 2 Heinrich von Drachenfels)

Do you know how many covers each might cover? If there are only two, then I would still need to paint alot of heraldy. No problem there, just want to understand what I get in a package, so to speak.

Thanks.

Beautiful Work!

heraldrydude14 Dec 2008 1:24 p.m. PST

Doug,
I forgot to ask. What rule set did you use for your "Battle of Worringen"?

Jon

Ours, The Art of War. 1066.us

I just noticed that the Brabanters use "Low Countires" as their army list (I forgot). Here is the troops breakdown:

Low Countries Armies
Holland, Brabant, Flanders, etc.
1100 A. D. to 1400 A. D.

Up to 30% cavalry and mercenaries:
up to 50% light infantry; crossbow 2 and sword.
Morale: 00-39=D, 40-89=C, 90-99=B
up to 50% medium and heavy infantry; pike and sword;
morale as above
up to 50% light and medium cavalry; lance and sword.
Morale: 00-29=D, 30-89=C, 90-99=B
up to 70% heavy cavalry; lance and sword. Morale:
00-19=D, 20-79=C, 80-99=B
up to 10% cataphract cavalry; as above

Up to 95% militia infantry:
*up to 60% unarmored infantry; levy with assorted
melee weapons and 1/4 bow 1 or sling. Morale:
00-69=D, 70-99=C
up to 10% unarmored infantry; bow 2 and sword.
Morale: 00-59=D, 60-89=C, 90-99=B
up 15% light infantry (up to 1/4 medium); crossbow 2
or 3 (up to 1/4 crossbow 3) and sword; morale
as above
up to 50% light infantry; pike and sword. Morale:
00-39=D, 40-89=C, 90-99=B
up to 30% medium infantry; as above
up to 20% heavy infantry; as above

Duke John's "1,000 (LI) light infantry spear" would be feudal levy troops, as per the German list.

Hi Doug,
When you laid out your "battlefield" for the battle of Worringen, what size table top did you decide on? I assuming you were wargaming 15mm or 25 figures.

I was considering using 25mm figures, so my question would, is a 4' x 8' table top size too big or too small or okay?

Thanks.

Jon

Daffy Doug16 Dec 2008 4:28 p.m. PST

The scale of minis is unimportant in our rules: it is the ground scale which counts, which is c. 10 yards to the inch.

My table is a pingpong, which is plenty big to do Worringen at that scale.

Lord Baldwin09 Feb 2009 1:12 p.m. PST

Does anyone know what figures were used in these pics?
