I've been down the road of clashing product names before and I'd like to avoid this issue in the future.

We are very early in the development stages of a Great War Tank game.

The original name was going to be "Landships". Turns out there's a board game with that name.

I'm considering "Lead The Way" not crazy about this name but it could work.

If you would be so kind, do any of you know of any other games named "Landships" or "Lead The Way"?

If anyone has a suggestion for a name that would be welcome as well.

Thanks,

mjc

Just don't call it Wargames.

What about 'Through mud and blood', from the tank corps motto. 'To the green fields beyond' is the second part, both seem like good names to me.

You can stay with "Landships" if you add a tag line like…

Landships – Tank Battles of the Great War.

The board game would be hard pressed to come after you for loss of revenue due to the name because it isn't a similar product…i.e it's not a board game.

Well, you're an American person – why not use "Treat 'em Rough", the US Tank Corps motto from the Great War.

It's a quote attributed to their commanding officer, General Hugh Elles, at Cambrai. The official motto is 'Fear Naught' – there's a snappy title :)

'To the Green Fields Beyond' is the title of an SPI game about the battle

I really like "Fear Naught, Landships of the Great War" Just Perfect! Thank you! Connard, remind me later, I'll give you a free copy if this is ever published.

Right now we have been messing around with Mark IV's and little else. I must confess, right now I know more about Mark IV's than I ever wanted to and very little about the other vehicles. Just the same it appears that the primary focus will be on the Brit Tanks for some time to come.

Many of my projects never go anywhere. The luster dulls after a few months, so don't hold your breath here.

This one looks to be a great deal of fun but so have others before the work had to be done.

Everything in time.

Thank you for your kind offer, but a small acknowledgement in the rules will do just as well :)

Fear Naught! is a GREAT title.

Connard, I may have to hire you to help me name my games! ;)

For what it's worth, someone owns the URL: fearnaught.org

Looks like a link to avoid, actually…

But that's an org, not a com, and it's also not a trademark. I wouldn't worry about it.

Gallowglass does make a good point. Unit mottos can be great names such as the 10th cavarlry's motto of 'Ready. Forward'.

"What about 'Through mud and blood', from the tank corps motto. 'To the green fields beyond' is the second part, both seem like good names to me."

I have also used both of those names in my own games. I can't think how many sets of rules called 'Storm of Steel' I've seen. 'Landships' is also the excellent website on WW1 tanks.

As Parzival says, I really wouldn't worry about it.

If you are worried about it though, how about:

'Sturmkampfpanzerwagen'. German always sells, and I don't believe it has been used before.

'Little Willie'? (I'm sure TFL would use that one!)

'Heavy Branch' (the branch title of the tank arm in the MG corps)

Tommy Atkins13 Dec 2008 1:34 p.m. PST

"With an Independent Air" from a contemporary song describing the tank advancing upon the enemy.

"Mud, blood and monoxide!"

"'Arf inch thick"

toofatlardies16 Dec 2008 4:22 p.m. PST

Actually TFL have a set of Great War rules in preparation for publication in February called "To the Green Fields Beyond". It's a 1:1 level system for games similar in size to Sharp Practice. So platoon to Company size basically.

Cheers

Yes! 'Attack of the Little Willies'. It'd sell like hot cakes!

Bucco Bruce18 Dec 2008 1:15 p.m. PST

check boardgamegeek.com they have a list of practically every game (board, minis, card etc etc ) ever.

FWIW I like Fear Naught.

Also, go to the USPTO and put the name(s) through their trademark search engine. It's also fun to look up other names too…. ;)

'Land Ironclads' was the name H.G.Wells gave to his tanks – in 1903!

That's a good 'un and he's unlikely to complain.

"Land Ironclads" is already in use
