Any comments on Scheltrum's Pictish curraghs? How many rowers' benches are there in the medium boat, how many in the large curragh? Are the models worth the 50% postage to the States?

The Curragh was made out of hide with a wooden frame. They could be big enough for 1 to 20 men. They were never too big. It was a wonder anyone could go any great distance in one. But I have heard tales of Irish monks making the journey to Iceland and even as some confecture to the Americas. Quite a journey for such a flimsy boat.

The big Scheltrum curragh has four evenly spaced benches almost in the middle of the boat.
The medium one has two forward of the middle. Both have a mast stand between the first and second bench.

The Gripping Beast curragh is much wider and much more 'oval' shaped.

Apparently, the smaller Scheltrum Miniatures "Irish" curragh is the one pictured in this thread????

Does anyone recognize this 'Saxon' boat?

huh?

That's correct. It is the smaller one of the Scheltrum curraghs. I'm in the process of painting them for my husband who's incidentally the one who posed the question in the thread. Nice boats but now he wants to crew them old fart

There are legends in Brittany about saints who came from Ireland sailing in "auges de pierre" (stone basins). That probably means curraghs, the locals were not used to that kind of boat.

I was not able to find them on the catalog, where are they listed?

Thanks – Allen
