Hey guys,

Inbetween teaching and kids, I am trying to paint up a German MG platoon for an FOW army. (Yes, I have a minis board set up in the garage… it's my "cave" so to speak)

What color are the ammo boxes? What Vallejo color/number would you recommend?

As always, thanks ahead of time.

I believe they were a dark olive green. At least in Europe – not sure they were painted tan in the Med. Oddly, panzerfausts and other equipment were painted the same dark yellow AFVs were.

There's some variation there, including oxidation, so I wouldn't be too picky about colors. Good old Violet Brown ought to work.

To my eyes, it looks like a dark olive. Maybe I'm losing my eyesight at my age (Got the glasses).

As for oxidation, well … what Vallejo color is that? ;)

I'm KIDDING! The humor was in the Vallejo color of oxida…

ah nevermind… some folks just don't get it.

As usual gentlemen, thank you so much.. I am not surprised about the yellow color for the DAK boyz.

I've seen black, green, tan and even white.

I usually do mine dark green, it just looks right.

39-42 : Dark Olive Green
43-45 : Dunkelgelb (even with some green brown camo stripes).

They came from the factory either in Dark Grey (which usually faded quickly) or dark olive.

But the camo pastes that were issued to the soldiers for camouflaging vehicles (and thus Dunkelgelb nach Muster, Green and Brown) were specifically issued to be used for camouflaging larger pieces of equipment (including MG-Ammo boxes) as well. So any of these 5 colours or even camo based on these are fine.
In addition they were whitewashed during the winter just like any piece of equipment.

Cheers,

Burkhard
