I just bought an olive drab outdoor mat to use for 15mm cornfields for ACW. I've seen others use the mats before. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some techniques for 'dressing' it up a bit so it doesn't look so plain.

drybrush yellow-green?

Yep, or a wash of yellow-green to get rid of the glossy finish of the plastic mat.

I use mine for beans in 28mm. I sprayed it dark green and drybrushed liberally and irregularly with lighter shades. Works a peach!

try flocking some dirt between the rows; along edges. I cut mine into strips, like 4 rows wide and 2-4 inches long so you can "build" fields and remove sections as troops move thru.

I spray painted some yellow [for dried/fall/winter] usimg some of the lower profile pieces; light green lightly sprayed over darker green for spring/summer

You can highlight things with an airbrush

I cut the mat into line of four rows each. Dry Brushed with a light green, and then dabbed all of the tops with a burnt yellow color. Finished off with painting the bases around the edges brown and dipped in ballast before they dried. The end product looks great!

Anyone have pictures?

And what happens when your units go "into" the field?

aye- that's my problem with matts as cornfields. Do your figures float along on the corn?

That's why I have decided to go with fur for my crops. Figures sink into it.
