Hi Guys,

I've just dug out my (quite large) FW Grenadier dwarf collection with a view of finally getting them based and painted. link

I'm a fan of Grenadiers old Fantasy Warriors (FW) game although very rarely play but want to do so more as I've now joined a club. However I also want to be able to play these figures in Warhammer.

FW basing for Dwarfs is 1" (25mm) square and WH is 20mm square. How do I base these for both systems? I'm sure i'm not the only one with this dilemma.

I'm inclined to base them on 20mm and to hell with the rules, but judging from the FW rules being able to bring 25% more figures to bear on a 4 figure frontage would be a tremendous (and unfair) advantage.

So I'm considering basing everything on 20mm bases (probably from litko litkoaero.com or East riding Miniatures link Putting magnetic bases under them. Then buying two complete sets of movement trays. One set to match the 20mm frontage of WH and the other set with 5mm spacer bars between the figures for FW.

Of course, in doing this i shall have to base every figure individually – no multiple bases.

I know this will be expensive as i have over 400 troops to base on 30 movement trays (and thats just my Grenadier dwarfs – have about 1.5 tims as many GW dwarfs too!) but I am looking to do this once and have a pretty impressive result at the end of it! Then I have around 300 Grenadier Orcs too (but at least the basing for those is the same size).

Has anyone else done this? Got some tips? Got other Ideas?

Regards

Brandlin

I'd put them onto 25mm bases as it won't make much of a differance with WH as there are other armies that use the 25mm bases.

I'd go 25mm too, figures are getting bigger and bigger but the base sizes are all from 30 years ago. Time to break with convention and bring figure basing into the new age.

To be fair Brandlin, we're not over fussy at Broughton. A few people play with WHFB based armies. So long as you don't try claiming "My 22 dwarves can get through that gap but your 18 elves can't" it will be fine.

Thanks for the advice Buff. Thats good to know. I'm not sure we've met at the club yet? Apologies if we hae and i have forgotten. Drop me a line from the clubyahoo group,…?

Pigmented Miniatures/peleset – i find your advice unusual, what oyu seem to be suggesting is to give up 25% frontage when playing warhammer?

Oh and peleset – all the figures i'm basing are 20+ years old anyway – i dont have a problem getting them on the smaller bases – that's not what i was asking…

I think I would base them on 20mm and make two sets of movement trays, one with 5m spacers between the bases to give the effect of 25mm. If depth is not important I only worry about using the spacers side-to-side. Not perfect, but easy and cheap.

Brandlin, you wouldn't be giving up 25% frontage with WHby using 25mm bases. Since you need 5 in a rank anyways, you will be gaining frontage with lager bases.

I would put them on 20mm magnetic bases then get some thin sheet metal to make a 25mm sabot. Flock the edge of the sabot & everything will look just fine.

pigmented – The frontage increases, but instead of bringing 5 dwarfs to bear over a 100mm frontage i'll only bring 4. Hence 25% decrease…

Thanks for the advice guys.
