Found this article on today. Very nice pics as well. Unbelievable preservation, you can see what looks like bronze bells and leather on the chariot. link |

Four-Wheeled "Chariot" – wouldn't that be called a "cart" or did the Thracians use Dual wheels for stability? I just wonder if they know what they have found or if it is a mistake in the translation or what. |

The Thracian "Dualie" was a special off-road chariot favored by the more rustic Thracians. They frequently drove them to their Naschar events. |

Two wheels are used, one is a spare, and the fourth is for steering. |

Would not 1,800 years ago be more Sarmatian in the Bulgarian region. It is about 200AD, post-Thracian army time like we refer to them in gaming. |

I'm sure 'chariot' sounds more dramatic, but seems more like a funerary cart/hearse. Maybe Dacian? |

Two wheels good, four wheels better. |

"Four-Wheeled "Chariot" – wouldn't that be called a "cart"" No, it's the ancient version of a minivan. If you look carefully in picture 3 you can see a car seat for an infant and a booster for a six year old. |

Actually Jovian1, a two-wheeled vehicle *is* a cart. A four-wheeled vehicle is a wagon. A chariot is properly a type of cart. Why on earth do I care? |

"
in southeastern Bulgaria." Here's Karanovo: link You can zoom out and see where it lay in the classical world, just south of the Haemus Mountains: picture That was Thrakia to the Greeks, and the province of Thracia to the Romans. "Thrace" is not anachronistic for that location in the c.2nd-3rd CE. Just barely. Allen |

Regardless of its status, the article is a sad statement on cultural awareness there when the archaeologist says: "we are in an uneven race with looters who are often better equipped than our teams". -- Tim |

"No, it's the ancient version of a minivan." It's called a SUV – Spartan Utility Vehicle. ;-) Pretty nifty article. aecurtis – that Satellite Images of Karanovo site blew my mind. I've added it into my favs. |
