This is a photo story of the prize-winning Japanese vs. NL wargame, Battle of TARAKAN Island in 1942, put on by:
Dortmund Amateur Wargamers
and photographed with their kind permission by myself and Joe here:

I thought this was a great display game, which brought to mind the sultry heat and lush vegetation of Borneo and the Dutch East Indies. This is about the 1942 Japanese invasion of this Dutch outpost which saw bravery, confusion and tragedy in equal measure.

The game won Best of Show at Crisis.

What do you think?

I saw this at Crisis and it stole the show.

Wow! That is a GREAT looking table.

How did you do the water effects?

Wargamer Blue21 Nov 2008 1:48 p.m. PST

That table is great. Next year it would be great if they did the Battle of Tarakan 1945 when the island was recaptured.

Awesome looking game! I really really like it, just incredible.

What rules were used?

Dragon Master21 Nov 2008 4:09 p.m. PST

Simply amazing. That's the type of game that keeps me coming back to wargaming.

I am most impressed by their stunning efforts. I'd be honored to play a game that looked half as good as this one does.

Wow, that's really a gorgeous table !

I rode a tramp steamer into Tarakan years ago, 1977, and spent three days there trying to sweet-talk my way onto one of the timber company planes which flew to Mindanao. Failed. Rode a coastal boat up the 'inland' waterways to the north instead.

Tarakan looks much better in the photos than in my memory.

Did you take any photos? They'd be interesting to see.

Disgutingly good scenery and a well thought outb and reseached scenario, looks like it deserved the "Best of Show"

Sorry to disappoint, Cacadores, but there was ZERO at Tarakan in '77 worth expending a frame of film.

I had my Indonesian visa extended while in Tarakan, and sweet-talking worked on the government official, who, since I was leaving Indonesia immediately, didn't make me pay the extension fee.

That's a shame. Not even a palm tree?
