Given that most rules have units/figures based on a element or stand, what is the general consensus (?) about the most common frontage for a colonial army (NWFrontier).
I tend to base my figures on a 6cm frontage for ancients, medieval, renaissance figures. ACW is a bit different.
I've got the figures, painted and about to base them before I've found a set of rules to use.

What size figures? Find a set of rules first. That will determine how you base them.

What Mike said

I can never figure (sorry) out why folks do things like this arse about face. Then again, I don't really understand the multi-utilitarianism that dictates 'I must base my figures for possible use with as many rulesets as possible'

25mm. Rules will come and go, just trying to figure out what's out there.

Individual basing, use The Sword and the Flame rules platoons of 20 figures. At least that way, if you want to try other rules that use multi basing you can make up cadre bases to use.

30mm frontages are a good compromise for elements – that is what I use with my 6mm and 15mm Colonials, my 28s are based individually.

Most rules you can fudge the ground scales around a bit so whatever basing scheme you like will work, but I've found 30mm works for a lot of rules without any mods required.

Rules come and go, figures are forever.

"you can make up cadre bases to use."

I think he meant sabot bases. But yeah, for 25mm, individual basing is the best approach given the almost ubiquity of TSATF.

"Rules come and go, figures are forever."

True, but how often have we all rebased our figures?

Something I try to avoid these days.

Basing was a consideration when writing Colonial Adventures. Individually based works best in my opinion. You can make inexpensive movement trays if you really feel you need to.

We ran four CA games at a con last weekend with almost 200 figures and eight players and it worked well and under two hours.

I use 3/4" frontage to base my 25-28mm figs for all skirmish and colonial games. 3/4" deep for foot, 1 1/2" for mounted. This offers much flexibility.
