I'm looking for information on the Regiment de Montroux (Italian, one battalion, 500 men) at Blenheim and again at Ramilles. My usual sources for uniforms and standards have nothing on this unit. If anyone in TMPland has any information on the uniform (including musicians' livery) and colours, I'd appreciate a post. Thanks.

Hmmm, now there's a stumper. A standard for regiment Mountroux (variously spelled Montraux) does appear in my "Trophees de la Guerre de Succession d'Espagne". However if I'm grasping the French properly, it's attributed as a Spanish Walloon regiment.

The standard features a Burgundian cross with a motto, "Pugnato Pro Deo, Ac Rege". In the center is a crown of Spain with a monogram of Phillip V. The border is outlined in blue and white triangles, but oddly there's no color listed for the central quadrant of the flag itself. There is no central cross typical of French infantry flags.

I'm not sure if any of that helps or further muddies the waters.

From Robert Hall's Flags and Uniforms of the French Infantry under Louis XIV 1688-1714 (plate 59b)

Drapeau d'ordonnance (regimental color)
White cross; cantons divided diagonally vlue and red (blue at the staff in 1) border aurore

Drapeau colonel
Unknown

Red coat and pants, blue cuffs and under coat, white (grey) stockings

No further details, sorry

That's probably closer to the mark. The Spanish-looking flag in "Trophees" had me scratching my head.

Thanks, Berlichtingen and CorporalTrim for the info. I agree that the Hall descriptions are probably closer to the mark – if not right on it. I suspect "Italian" in this case means Savoy/Swiss border and not from further down the boot.

Also from Hall under the section on regimental name…

1690 Montroux, Philippe-Marie de (from Piedmontese
soldiers of the regiments: La Marine, Aosta and Nice after
the defection of the Duke of Savoy)

Perfect, thanks again!
