I had a question for those familiar with this game. The game description says if one wanted to the game could be played anywhere, examples included floors and across furniture. This seems to imply that the game is not dependent on square based movement, i.e. rows of squares across the race track. Does anyone know if this is the case or at least an option to do so is available? I wanted to build a free-form track that would not have movement squares. I hoping movement is based on measuring with a ruler. Thanks. Joey |

I haven't played the game, but watched it played at Historicon. I can't remember for sure but think it may have been either measured movement or a kind of area movement. The racetrack at H-con was huge, going around about 8 tables set up in a hollow square. |

Off road movement is an option. I got the rules, and I am a little disappointed they seem to be a rip-off of Formula De. They use the same dice movement and segmented road movement. |

The rulebook and website has rulers you can use for straight-line movement. There also a turning template included in the rulebook for turns without a segmented track. The segemented track pieces help speed up a turn, but are not necessary. Rules are included for traction on common household surfaces (tile, carpet, etc.) as well as real world surfaces (sand, concrete, etc.) so making a free form track can be easily accomodated. The race at historicon transitioned between segemented road and open areas. |

What tima113 said. The rules are quick and easy to learn, and a lot of fun. |

Yes. Thus I can start planning my track. Thanks all. Joey |

Dear Deathwing (how weird is that?), A late response, but one that nonetheless will answer you question -- yes, Speed Rally is designed to be played anywhere, and doesn't rely on a set course. If you haven't bought the game yes, the rules are available at speedrally.net. As for Inari7's comments, we've never made any secret about the influence Formula De has had on our game. In fact, we designed it specifically for those player who wanted more combat in Fde but didn't want to go as far as Car Wars. +JP |

For anyone interested in the Speed Rally rules, the Green Flag edition of the game is now out. This is the final version of the basic game and incorporates all the tweaks we made over the past year, and the few bits of errata we found in last year's micro-release. We also included a short preview of some of the devices and weapons you'll see in the SR expansion "Bigger, Badder, Faster," due out at the end of 2009/early 2010. (Conveniently enough, all these items appear on the vehicles in the new Battle Machines line from Jada.) You can order the PDF online at speedrally.net +JP P.S. And if you happen to be in Lancaster, PA, this weekend, I will be running two Speed Rally events on Saturday afternoon, July 18, at Historicon at the Lancaster Host on Rt. 30. |

"we designed it specifically for those player who wanted more combat in Fde but didn't want to go as far as Car Wars." Does this mean I should look elsewhere for a more Car Wars/Road Warrior like experience? Thanks! |

@Rassilon
I've never played Car Wars. I'm guessing however, that it had many layers of details, and was much more complicated than Formula De. Speed Rally is easy to come to grips with and play. That doesn't mean it has no depth. Does it have enough for you? Only you would know that. Here are a few details: You build your "combo" (car & driver) by spending points. Everyone gets a set number of points, and from that you spend, spend, spend. Where and how you spend is up to you. Everything below is acquired by spending points 1 – Drivers have two stats – Skill & Reaction. 2 – Cars fit into one of 11 different basic types. Each basic type has a cost associated with it. Each basic type will give you body points (damage), chassis ratings (how sturdy the vehicle is), slots (for upgrades), and a corner modifier. 3 – You can buy upgrades up to the number of slots your car has. There are currently 24 upgrades listed, including a better suspension, more armour, having a computer, being able to booster jump, etc. 4 – You can buy up to two weapons (one per side) for your vehicle. These do take up slots. There are currently 11 to choose from (things like smoke, oil, machineguns, flame throwers, etc). 5 – You can buy passengers, and they can have items with them, including hand guns, hand grenades, chains, etc (9 to choose from). Those are the basics. It seems like quite a few options to me, but if you were hoping for 100 weapons, then no, this isn't detailed enough. As an option, you can classify drivers by "type" as well (there are 12 of these). These cost points, and give the players certain special advantages, and disadvantages. For example, a Racer is more about driving than combat. He gets 1 action, and has no limit to the types of devices he can have in his car, but he can only have 1 weapon. As an optional rule, there is a table of disadvantages you can roll on. As an optional rule, there are campaign points to be earned, and spent gaining new skills. As an optional rule, you can form racing teams. All packed into 46 pages, along with charts, tables, graphs, color illustrations and examples, sample track to copy, driver forms to copy, and even a teaser for the first expansion called Bigger, Badder, Faster (which will include 2 more vehicle types – motorcycles and 18 wheelers, 3 new driver types, and nearly 30 new weapons and devices, along with other expansion rules. I've played a few solo games to get the hang of it, and they play pretty smoothly. I bought this set to be a racing wargame, not just a racing game. And I am pleased with how the total package came together. They are easily worth the $10 USD I paid for the PDF. Hope that helps you decide if these are for you. Steve |

Thanks Steve! Even though that's not what I meant by my comment/question your answer was very helpful. :) I was just wondering what he meant by "not as far as car wars"? As in
does it have weapons and combat in a Car Wars/Road Warrior vain or is it more like Speed Racer? :) I'm curious because I just bought some of the 1/64 Battle Machines and intend to buy some more cars to trick out and i'd like to know more about the other systems out there. :) Steve, as your in Seattle, if you host a game i'd be interesting in trying it out. :) Adrian |

> As in

Hey Rassilon, I'm the game's designer -- the basic set that is now available is more Speed Racer than Road Warrior. The expansion (out next year) will add more weapons and armor -- mostly because I too bought the whole line of Battle Machines :)
Fyi, the current PDF of the rules has a 1-page preview of weapons and devices from the expansion that conveniently works with the Jada cars +JP |

Thanks! :) I'll look forward to the expansion!! :) |

@Rassilon
yes, used to live in the Seattle area, but no longer :-( And to back up the game designer, I'd say the game is more speed racer in intent
but that doesn't mean it's not Death Race 2000 in my mind. (Mad Max to me is more than just the vehicles, but getting out of vehicles, clambering over to the other guys vehicle in a boarding action, etc. I don't see this game going that route, but I could be wrong). I bought the full set of Jada Battle Machines when I saw this rule set. I play my games where killing the opposition is encouraged. So to me, it's got plenty of action, and oh yeah, there's some driving/racing going on as well. Not the other way around. The expansion will add even more "combat" options. I'm sure it will add driving & racing options as well. I'll be picking that up when it's released. |
