Hi Guys, is there anybody out there that can explain, in simple terms, how to paint Prussian musicians. Are their uniforms the same as the regiments or are they opposite (facing colours). I'm not an idiot but I can't seem to get my head around some of the discriptions I've found. HELP! |
| Camcleod | 20 Nov 2008 12:05 p.m. PST |
Same basic uniform, but with a TON of lace !! See: link link link Note that the musician's uniforms were different for each regiment. Which regt. are you doing? Cliff |

Cliff Thanks for getting back. I'm thinking of doing the following regiments, |

Cliff The regiments I'm thinking about to start with are: IR6 IR7 IR15 IR42 Mark. |

IR6: all the men, including musicians, wear grenadier mitres. Lace strip edging to both sides of the coat opening; 8 lace loops (with rounded ends and no tassels) across the coat front in pairs 2-2-2-2 with the bottom 2 being longer than the top six; coat pockets outlined in lace; blue swallows' nests at shoulder with 5 lace strips and lace edging along the bottom with lace strips running down the arm along both seams of the sleeve with 8 inverted-V chevrons that reach to about 4 inches below the elbow; running from the cuffs the usual inverted-L shape but in full lace (unlike the plain piping usual for most musketeer regts). The lace itself is basically white with two narrow red lines. IR7: Plain white lace. Lapels are unadorned like the men's but there are two pointed-ended lace loops just below the lapels; the little bit of the open coat front that doesn't include the lapel area has a lace strip edging to both sides of the open front; coat pockets outlined in lace; swallows' nests with alternating white and rose-pink (matching the facing colour) lace strips about 4 pink and 5 white with the bottom edged with a white lace strip; two lace strips running down the arms along the sleeve seams with 9 inverted-V lace strips running evenly-spaced all the way down the length of the sleeves; plain Swedish cuffs like the other men's. IR15: They are similar for all three battalions, but which battalion? Lace, unless noted otherwise is white with a red stripe runing down the centre for all three. What all three have in common is
plain unlaced coat pockets; an aguillette on the right shoulder; coat collar edged in lace; blue swallows' nests with 4 or 5 lace strips and lace edging along the bottom; lace strips running down the sleeve along the seams; Swedish cuffs with two buttons at the cuff edges with plain silver lace loops running from the buttons. The open coat front is unlaced. They both have inverted-V lace strips running along the sleeves but for 15/I there are 7 evenly-spaced ones running the entire length of the sleeve. And for both 15/II and /III (with III's musicians all wearing mitres like the other men) there are 8 closely-spaced ones that just run to about 4 inches below the elbow. Other differences are that 15/I has 9 fancy, wide, silver lace loops with tasseled ends across the chest. While for both 15/II and /III there are plain red lapels with 6 short, plain, silver lace loops spaced 2-2-2 like the men's lapels. IR42: Fusilier regiments that have Swedish cuffs generally have much plainer musicians' uniforms. 42's lace pattern is (more or less) white with an orange zigzag running down its centre. The collar is unlaced. The coat pockets are laced; there is a lace edging around the plain lapels (but no loops) and also along the open coat front; there are blue swallows' nests with 4 lace strips and lace bottom edging; the sleeves are completely plain; and the outer edge of the Swedish cuffs is lace trimmed. |

Thanks for the help guys. Just one more question before I dive in as thinking about it isn't getting any figures painted. Some figures (musicians) are depicted with aprons, What colour should I use. |

White for whitened leather. |

Most of the Prussian drummer aprons I've seen in pictures are a mid-brown color, assuming animal skin without the hair. By the way, does anyone have any information on the drummer's lace for the 37th Prussian Fusilier regiment? Done in 15mm, so just a hint would help.

IR37: Oh-oh. Narrow, straight lines of white, red, blue, red, white, red, blue, red, white. In the schematic drawing of the coat (that's 5cm tall) it looks like it's white with two red lines running through it. On the bright side, GdeP, they're not zigzags. |

A pic is worth a thousand words. Found this Knotel/Brauer plate on the Yahoo 7YW boards: picture The black lines show where the musician's lace is applied. Or if you're not part of Yahoo: picture Cliff |

Thanks, Andygamer and Camcleod! I have done the 35th, 37th, 39th and 40th in Old Glory 15's, using 48 figures each – 3 ranks for 16, on 9mm frontage per figure. The drummers are 2nd man from each end on the rear rank, with NCO's at the extreme ends. Not much to see, and in 15mm, I will probably just paint the lace white! The 40th is more rose than white, but
. Year ago I used to do my units on stands with color coding on the rear edge. For the French in 7YW, I used to flag colors – Conde in cream/dark blue rear edge, for instance. I sill do this for the cavalry, because I like to do squadrons of 8 figures (6 for Prussian hussars), and when I do more than one squadron, varied rear edge colors help keep the squadrons separate. I just started on 30 figures of the 1 (von Kleist) Prusssian Hussars and will use the light green modified with tabs of white or dark green to mark the 5 squadrons I am doing. I do not over the bases with grass, etc, for I am an old "Toy Soldier" fan, and love the grass-green bases of the old Britains Ltd 54mm toys. I just paint the basswood stands in chromium oxide green. To each his own! Thanks again, guys. GdeP GdeP |
