Hello. One of my colleagues is putting a game with the rules Napoleons Battles. When I asked he told me it was version 2, but we had little time and could not ask for more information.

I only know the original ruleset from Avalon Hill which I bought back on 1990, has it been published a second version from AH or another publisher?.

There was a second edition, but I believe it went out of print very quickly

There's a review here

link

As you can see, the green cover of the first edition was changed

Also two modules were released for the first edition, containing errata, extra rules and scenarios

2nd edition was not well received for some reason. There is a 3rd edition on the way. I own the first edition. Picked it up for about $22 USD from ebay. It is still the game I remember when I played it all those years ago. Well worth it.

Wow Connard, you are the most knowledgeable guy on Napoleonics on these boards, thank you very much.

From what I have seen from that review seems the rules have some failings in its design wich could be exploited. I will try to have a look at them asap.

Some failings? Hah! Yeah, I think so!

Good luck as long as you have fun with the game.

The first edition was what I began Napoleonics enjoyment on. It had its problems, but was good on a one-or-two-corps on each side basis. It slowed if you played large games.

I think Fire and Fury variations replaced it. They are simpler from what I have seen and use the same basing.

I would go with Age of Eagles (Napoleonic Fire and Fury if I were starting out in 15mm or smaller Napoleonics again.

Sounds spooky. :^/

I'm beginning to think the game will be "funny" rather than fun. frown

Me too, in fact that was our first idea after having gamed several times with AoE, doing Waterloo with it. But suddenly the guy who is putting the game and supplying most of the miniatures has decided to go with this ruleset. I accept the change but I think it's a bad idea.

Napoleons Battles is an excellent ruleset. Some don't like some of the minor (IMO) parts of the game but overall its great. It is the reason I continued with Napoleonics rather then giving up after playing Empire a couple times. It is simple to learn and gives good results.

A third edition is to be published next month, the last I heard.

The second edition had some issues as far as typos, and poor editing on the part of the publisher Five Forks, which btw went out of business shortly after the release of the 2nd edition. Not becuse of that rules set but other issues with their company. The main difference between the two other then the beautiful 2nd ed rule book was that some optional rules in first ed were made standard.

Third edition sounds like it will be a well packaged game. I look forward to seeing it. I think you will enjoy the game.

Good luck,

Kevin

Thanks Kevin,

I've been out of the loop for a month or so. My computer wen kablooy. Then I have had problems circumventing the cookie requirement. But I am back.

The 3rd will be released in early December. It will be boxed, contain 2 booka and rather than a scenario book, scenario cards. It will also included wooden markers and other gegaws the publisher insists on, including full color.

Craig and I are in the process of proofing the scenario cards.

Good gaming.
