These are the small pictures, which are consequently a bit short on detail.

These are bigger versions which have more detail BUT are around half a meg each.
WARNING.
Big files!

Beautiful regiment! I've got some Mindens too. Sadly mine are still on my workbench waiting for the painting. I've saved your pictures to use as some inspiration for when I get started on them. Thanks for sharing.

jtipp6820 Nov 2008 8:01 a.m. PST

Awesome pics! I absolutely love these figures, you have definitely done them justice with an amazing paintjob.

Prinz Geoffrey20 Nov 2008 8:15 a.m. PST

fantastic paint job. They look great.

Excellent work

Cheers guys.
I kind of cheated a bit with the small clothes colour.
They should really be much paler – straw.

By including orange in the base coat that provides complimentary contrast with the blue.
So Prussians with orangey yellow smallclothes are almost guaranteed to look better than Prussians with white ones.

Great painting job – thanks for the tip on the small clothes, I have a couple of Prussian regiments to paint up and will take advantage!

I particularly like the "lean" look – it strikes me that many of the current SYW figures look a bit chunky for an army that lived as close to the edge as the Prussian one did

Andy ONeill20 Nov 2008 12:07 p.m. PST

I think that's to do with accuracy of proportions.
Look up the rule of 7 and some other rules on proportions artists use.
Then check em out against some magnified pictures of various ranges.
You can find examples on Frank's blog.

Mindens are accurate.
Certain other hugely popular metal manufacturers produce figures could not be human.

We're used to seeing figures which represent someone with dwarfism + gigantism and some other weird deformities.

ioannis20 Nov 2008 5:08 p.m. PST

Excellent work!

What paints did you use for the buff color?

Thanks for sharing!

Jeigheff20 Nov 2008 6:03 p.m. PST

Those are really splendid figures!

RSM figures are also sculpted in proper human proportions. They're 30mm IIRC.

von Winterfeldt20 Nov 2008 11:25 p.m. PST

phantastic figures and superb painting – they look like the bit.

I would howver base them much more densly, they look like being in a skirmish line.

Cardinal Hawkwood21 Nov 2008 12:27 a.m. PST

terrific

Theword21 Nov 2008 3:16 a.m. PST

Very nice mate.. inspiring.

Andy ONeill21 Nov 2008 4:05 a.m. PST

I'm happy with the density on the bases.
They're based with 15mil frontage on 45x40mil bases ( from Renedra ).
If I packed them tighter I think they would be very difficult to base nicely.
I did think of basing the second row slightly offset but that didn't seem so practical when I experimented.
Plus the individually based casualties would have been tricky.

The buff.
Base coat of 2 layers GW Vomit brown. This is a rich orangey sand-brown sort of colour. The exact colour doesn't matter so much and you could substitute any sort of ochre + burnt sienna + white kinda mix.
Remember that a bit of orange in there is important for the complimentary contrast and the viewer doesn't notice the mid so much as the highlight.
2 layers are necessary to get an even finish.
First highlight of naples yellow.
Mainly so the highlight creases are clear to me.
Reinforce deeper shading with brown + vomit brown.
Reinforce the more noticeable highlights with naples yellow.
Final highlighting with naples yellow + titanium white.

Other SYW figures.

Frank's blog has a comparison picture showing a number of makes compared to his Minden stuff.
If you can find another range which is correctly proportioned and as detailed let me know.

Particularly Russians.
I want Russians eventually and Frank doesn't plan on doing them.

ioannis21 Nov 2008 4:33 p.m. PST

Thanks for the tips!

Cardinal Hawkwood29 Dec 2008 2:01 p.m. PST

AONEIL, maybe you should come and start a request on the above forum for Russians! I can imagine they would be very very popular..

Where can I buy "Mindens"

dbf167629 Dec 2008 3:37 p.m. PST

Union Jack: Minden Miniatures are not a business, but commissioned by an individual who it will sell figures to support his efforts to have the figures made. All is explained on his blog: mindenminis.blogspot.com

You will have to contact him through email. His address is near the bottom of the right side of the first page.

As to quality, the figures speak for themselves, but they are absolutely beautiful IMHO.

Cardinal Hawkwood: the Hanoverians wore pig tails. They are shown with these in the Sturm Cigaretten pictures if you look closely at one of the men turned t the side. Also, Knotel shows pigtails on the guard grenadiers and on the freikorps grenadiers, so I would assume that all rank and file wore them.

I'm in the process of prepping 60 Minden Austrian infantry for priming and painting, inspired in part, by this posting and the pictures shown on this thread.

I glue mine to a US penny to give them a couple more millimeters in height so that they are similar to the Staddens, Surens and Crusaders in my armies. If I were starting all over, I think that I would use 100% Minden figures.

Andy ONeill30 Dec 2008 4:03 a.m. PST

Cardinal Hawkwood.
No problem.

I would recommend you ask first in future though.
Some people can get rather stroppy about losing control of their content.

I like the idea of more figures compatible with the Minden. As well as Russians I would buy casualties. Oooh… and French Indian war British light troops…. there's probably a fair old list if I sat and thought.

Union Jack Jackson31 Dec 2008 12:00 p.m. PST

thanks dbf1676. The figures are very nice, must pm him next time I buy.

Rob UK05 Jan 2009 2:15 a.m. PST

Nice work

The Picktree Brag08 Jan 2009 4:09 a.m. PST

Simply breathtaking!

majormike6920 Jan 2009 1:40 p.m. PST

I love those figures absolutely beautiful.

Khaki0822 Jan 2009 8:01 a.m. PST

Lovely,

And coincidentally using the same size of unit as I have settled on, (4x6 plus command)

What organisation/rules-set do these chaps serve under?
