Anyone have thoughts on the differences between rules sets such as Polemos/Died for Glory/1870? This would be for 6mm figures.

Hey Mark,
Off hand I would say Polemos or 1870, both of which seemed more designed with 6-10mm in mind.
I love They Died for glory, but the battalions are 16-24men
and you do keep track of figure losses.

Polemos, I find a little more versatile with the double basing & gives a better command feel.

While both 1870 and 1859 have been quietly calling to me since I read them…

I think they put you in too tactical a mode for the scale. You are doing a lot of work as army commander that should be "factored in" in a game of that scale (IMO of course).

I haven't read the others.

There's also the new version of Volley & Bayonet…

Personally I found both 1870 and Polemos a bit fiddly for my tastes. Although I suppose the same criticism could be levelled at V&B, it does actually work quite well for really big battles which (to my mind) characterise the FPW.

First off….
Everyone should go out and purchase Bruce's 1870 and 1859… They are great works for the period….

Rules wise…
Volley & Bayonet without question.

I've done Spicheren, Worth, and Loigny with V&B. All great fun.

There is also "There are Your Guns!" which have battalions/Regts as the smallest units (allows Jagers to appear on the battleground etc.) or the Wyre Forest Wargames Group have suggestions for converting Fire & Fury. Otherwise I prefer the look of 1870 vs Polemos (but have never played either!) simply because I prefer more smaller bases vs less bigger bases (if that makes sense?).
