Hello Everyone,

I have been out of painting miniatures for about 12 years, but want to get back into it.

I also have a ten-year old that I want to teach.

Armory had a pretty good little booklet when I was a kid, but I am looking for something more thorough. I figure with the Internet and cut and paste, there must be some Really Great in-depth manual out there online that I can download.

Graphics are always a plus.

Any input that you have would be welcome.

The Foundry painting book is very thorough with step by step photos and instructions. It's very expensive though….

I will second the Foundry book -- runs in excess of $50.00 USD IIRC.

I just got done watching the new DVD from Privateer Press's new P3 line Modeling and Painting Vol 1 Core Techniques and I have to say its the best vid I have ever seen on painting miniatures.

I think there $29.95 USD

The Darkson Designs book was one of the best I had read . very good photos and tips .\

Check some of the articles on CoolMiniOrNot.com as well as Reaper Miniatures has a craft section too.

If you can afford all three, and prefer actual books, I have the "Foundry Guide" and the "Darkson" books mentioned, and the "How to Paint Citadel Miniatures."

There is some cross-over between them but having all three gives a brilliant overview.

If you are aiming more for "Gaming" standard and considering your son's age, I would buy the "Darkson" book last.

Buy the Foundry painting guide new from Amazon.com for $26.37 USD USD.

Yea…

Foundry
Darkson ( too bad they did not make a Vol.2)
and the Cool Mini or Not one is decent ( and a cheap download)

Those are three great places to go. But the Darkson one is for more advanced painters. No real basic techniques in there.

I enjoyed the Foundry book very much. I think the Citadel book is really a waste of money…I really didn't find much in there that wasn't easily available on sites such as this!
:) I found the Foundry book to just be better written, better examples, more varied processes, etc.
I'll have to check out the Darkson book. I love their figures and am enjoying reading the AE-WWII rules.

Oh yeah, and I got my copy of the Foundry guide from Amazon about a year ago for $25.00. Might still be a good place to look.

F.A.Q.:Frequently Asked Questions About Painting Figure Techniques by the Andrea Miniatures Team is another good resource book. I've got it and the Foundry book. Like 'em both, but the FAQ I found to be the more helpful. It's available through Amazon.

The different books and sources do teach different methods. The Foundry book teaches a style well suited towards gaming minis (start from dark/shadow colors and go to light/highlight colors using opaque layers).

The Citadel book (from what I've seen flipping through it) is also well suited towards some basics (with more of an emphasis on washes and drybrushing).

I like the Darkson book as well, but it's more of an intermediate book.

As PaintMinion mentioned, there are a number of good articles on CoolMiniOrNot and in Reaper's the Craft section. In the latter is what was my take on a shopping list for beginning painters (as of a couple of years ago).

One of the best things to do is actually sit down with other painters and watch and learn from them. Your local gaming store may have a painting club of some sort. Being able to see something in person is invaluable.

Like maninthemoon I want to get back into painting some of my old fantasy figures from the early 1980's.

I know paints have moved on since I last painted and was hoping to read a book or two so I could brush up (no pun intended) on my techniques.

I like the look of the Foundry book but does anyone know if the Darkson Designs Volume 2 painting guide is in print yet as nothing showing up on their website?

Cheers
