Hi Guys

My Father has recently taken an interest in the history of the American Civil War. Looking for recommendations for decent books. Help would be appreciated.

For a general read of the Civil War, I would recommend Bruce Catton's Trilogy. Very enjoyable and easy reading with a good overview of the entire conflict. Of course there are others to recommend also.

Bookstores also have many discounted books on clearance. Check them out. Some nice general books there. Everyone likes a good map book.

There are some very nice "coffee table" type books out that provide a good starting read with lots of illustrations and maps – Catton, as astutely noted, is a great read, and Shelby Foote has several excellent popular histories on the war, of which the 3 volume set "The Civil War – A Narrative" is maybe the best
