That is an awesome paint job – and the photography looks fine to me. What figures are those – Foundry? |
| Stuart M | 08 Nov 2008 9:05 a.m. PST |
They are Foundry, yes, great figures |

Very nice Stuart. Thanks for sharing. Who are the figures by? The general appears to be Foundry, but wasn't sure about the others, since there is more than one horse pose, which is throwing me off. Also, Stuart has some nicely painted Arquebusiers and Crossbowmen, if you check his other photos. Best regards,
Rob |

All of the cavalry are Foundry. I have used some Front Rank figures with the Spanish, here's the link again to save swapping between pages; picture I'll put some Landsknechts on here soon aswell |

Thanks for the additional info, and the closeup of your General on horse. I'd love to see more closeups of your other cavalry figures as well. What color(s) do you use for priming and painting the men, and horses? |

Hi Stuart, Thank you for sharing your photos. I really appreciate it. Your figures look superb. Sorry, a couple more questions. What paints do you use for your yellows, since they look quite opaque, especially over the black primer? Do you paint a white coating first, underneath the yellow area, to keep the color from being too dark, and muddy looking? I've tried painting yellow over black primer, without much success. What did you use for inspiration for your decorative trappings on the horses? Best regards,
Rob |

Stuart they are cracking!! Brilliant paint job!! Congratulations! Rob's question about the yellow colour is interesting indeed! You managed a perfect colour here IMO! Cheers Romain |

Yeah, those are really great. I'm soon to get to painting my 10mm Spaniards, I might well lift that general color scheme off of your Arquebusiers. |

Hello there I use Wargames Foundry paints, the yellow is their Ochre, they use a 3 step system so when you buy a particular colour you'll get 3 pots, a shade, mid tone and light, and they seem to work particularly well with a black undercoat. It gives a more deep and natural looking yellow as well, not lemon or canary. The inspiration for the barding is from various woodcuts and period paintings. The images above are of a unit of German Heavy Cavalry so for a bit of cohesion the main colour scheme I have used is yellow and black. One painting to which I have drawn a lot of inspiration from, particularly for Maximillian is a painting of Henry VIII meeting Maximillian, I'm afraid I don't know the artist but it's a great source, you'll probably find it in any decent book on the Tudors or Henry VIII, here's a link to a rather poor copy to give you an idea; link With the Spanish troops i've stuck to earthy colours and yellow and red, almost every figure has at least a bit of red on. As for the Landsknechts, there is no rule really, go nuts! although I REALLY have to be focused and in the mood to paint Landsknechts as it can be hard to get them to look just right. For those there's a great book by J.R. Hale entitled Artists & Warfare in the Renaissance, you may be hard pressed to find it cheaply but it's a sound investment. |

Fyi. One good source for Spanish of the period is – 'Los Tercios Espanoles' by Carlos Montuenga (Madrid 1984) – in Spanish. Also try Funcken Volume 2, the Renaissance, useful shots of Swiss, landsknechts as well as knights. There is also Osprey's old volume (Men At Arms 1976) on the Landsknechts, which I thought was one of their best. Stuart – great work on the knights, inspires me to get cracking on figures I have had for years. Don't know if you ever saw 28mm knights from a company called Vulcan. They came in 'bits' – variations in helmet plumes, horse barding as well as the knights themselves. Garry |

Nice work! Do you plan to have Spanish pikes and if so what figures do you plan to use? Rich |
| Stuart M | 18 Nov 2008 2:58 a.m. PST |
Hello Rich I do plan to have some Spanish pike and i'm eagerly awaiting the forthcoming TAG releases as IMO there aren't any decent figures out there for this yet – it's very frustrating! While i'm waiting i'll keep myself occupied with cavalry and Landsknechts. |
