Hi, I have been looking for some references for the banners used at the Battle of Sempach. I haven't been able to find much. I have an old sketch (b/w) of (3) banners, but don't know the colors, and haven't been able to find where I found those. I would like to set up an Austrian or Swiss army, but haven't made my mind up yet. I realize there are the normal Swiss banners referenced all over the place, but the (3) sketches of the actual ones, have a lot more detail and are specific to individuals (ie, Schauffhausen, Hochberg, etc.) Thanks. Maybe ask at 'Freezywater' publications? Have a great little reference on the Burgundians and tons of Burgundian, Flemish, Swiss, WOR and Italian Flags – they may have a booklet about Sempach and some ideas on the Austrian flags there. I think looking at the Swiss cantons at Sempach you could get an idea of the flags there (unless they changed them over the hundred years or so before the Burgundian Wars?). However, I can see that specific captains or town guilds and contingents may have had their own banners that are not used in later years. I'll take a gander at Freezywater and see what they have and re-post. |

Don't seem to have anything on Sempach – however you might want to contact them anyway as there may be an article in 'The Hobilar' or 'Scourer' or they might be able to point you to some sources. [The US agent is Bob Burke at 'Dragons and Dragoons']. You can search their archives. I have a bunch of flags and some publications from them and all transactions were very smooth. |

Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I will try and contact them. There is a lot of art (paintings, etc) that depicts quite a few of them. I have a couple of hundred COA's for the individuals themselves, but didn't have much on their banners. Thanks again. Jon |

You may want to get hold of the Schweizer Fahnen buch. This does have a number of flags from this period, both from the larger towns and of individuals. |

Have you had a look at the DMWS site: link They have banners for Schauffhausen, Hochberg etc in the Holy Roman Empire section at the top of the page. Under the paragraph starting with "Flags for the armies of the Habsburgs" are 8 files with banners relating to the Hapsburgs, some of which are from the Sempach era, including the ones you name. Hope that is of assistance, found them while looking for some Burgundian stuff a while ago. The DMWS has some very good stuff on it. Cheers KRO |
