My friend Brian and I had another FOG game. He typed up the AAR and I posted it to the EWG AAR site. Lots of pictures so it may be slow to load. link |

Your game was very similar to my results playing Gauls against Romans at Tactical Solutions 2008. Only difference was that my Gauls were part of a Carthaginian Army. We won a close victory only because the elephants went stomping through the middle of the Romans -- that and our skirmishers did a number on the Roman Skirmishers. mjc |

We did Gauls vs Roman a couple of weeks ago. I was Romans and broke the Gauls, losing just one base and my camp. No other attrition points lost. I was quite lucky, and the other players were a bit less experienced, but it's quite a difficult one to win for the gauls. The gauls have to win on the flanks, using their cavalry & chariot superiority before the main infantry lines clash. My opponent also had some gauls rear supporting the line. I think this was a mistake – they should be with the main infantry line to overlap and then flank the Romans. |

Taking on Romans with loose formation foot in the open, with equal depth of formation is a sure-fire way to lose the gauls The Gauls need to go into the roman line in a deeper formation than you had here methinks – 4 wide x 3 deep, or even 3x4 maybe? Then the larger Gallic units will be able to wear down the Romans (in theory). You can also get your rear support from the Gallic loose formation foot, and use them in smaller units than the big blocks of 12 heavy foot in the front line. In FoG you only need half as many stands as your front line unit to get rear support – so a unit of 6 can support 2 units of 12 by deploying in column behind the "join" in both units – just like the small Triarii blocks can support 2 larger Principes/Hastti units. |

Brian was commanding the Gauls and I was commanding the Romans. He's asked to have a rematch and I'm looking forward to it. Both of use are sure to change our tactics. He'll no doubt do his best to collapse my flanks and I'll do my best to destroy his center before that happens. Mike C |
