I've finished painting my first full brigade, meant to represent the "Irish Brigade", including a base with their colonel and chaplain. The miniatures are 10mm GHQ.

Are they 1" square bases? What rules are you using them for?

Really nice looking figures!

Very, very nice.

Very well done! What rules will you use?

Dan Beattie30 Oct 2008 9:59 p.m. PST

Very attractive. No distinctive green regimental flags?

FireZouave31 Oct 2008 4:53 a.m. PST

Great Job! I was also expecting to see green flags.

Albino Squirrel31 Oct 2008 9:20 a.m. PST

Thanks for the compliments!

The bases are actually 3/4" square, which I think is also close to 20mm. I haven't played with any rules set yet, but the first set I plan on trying out is Field of Battle by Piquet. The rules suggest four bases to a unit, but I'm using five for several reasons, not the least of which is that it simply looks better to have the command base in the exact center of the regiment. The game also suggests a unit frontage of 4"-8", with 6" being ideal. Since mine will be 3.75", I intend to halve all distances listed in the rules, and it should work out okay and allow me to fit more units on the board.

But the basing should work okay for some of the other rules I've looked into, like Regimental Fire and Fury.

There are a couple of green flags in there. I originally intended to have two flags in each regiment, one national and one green regimental. And the first regiment I did had two. Here are some closer up pictures so you can see:

But I ended up abandoning that plan for a few reasons. First, the GHQ infantry packs are 24 figures, plus three command figures. So I was using three packs for each two regiments. But that only leaves me with three flags to split between two regiments, so not enough for two flags per regiment. Also, the standard bearer for the firing unit is in a standing pose and is kind of wide, so there wasn't enough room to fit two of them next to each other.

Not to mention that for the firing units, the standard bearer figure actually has stripes modeled onto the flag. Which is really great and makes it much easier to paint if you're doing the US flag, but doesn't help much for a regimental flag. And I'm not a great painter when it comes to freehand painting images, especially on wavy flags.

The marching unit also has a green flag, but it's rolled up so it's harder to notice, but was much easier to paint. And in general, the US flag stands out much more than the green regimental flag, so if a unit was only going to have one flag, I figured it would look better to have it be the national flag.

That's really nice work. Those green regimental flags look great. I'm especially impressed you managed to paint the tassels on them. I've painted the same figures but I've never succeeded in getting that kind of detail.

Thanks SJDonovan. I have a few really tiny brushes for that sort of thing. I even try to paint historically accurate facial hair on the colonels and the Brig. General, based on the photographs of them I was able to find online. I'm sure nobody will ever notice it, but I'll know it's there.

Pretty impressive that you painted the flags at that scale. Tiny and allot of work. I went with Perrin flag bearers and printed paper flags. So, when/where do we get to see them on a gaming table? :-)

Albino Squirrel06 Nov 2008 7:16 a.m. PST

Thank you, EJNash. As for when they'll be seen in an actual game… Well, I recently finished a Union artillery battery, and now I'm working on a Union commander in cheif stand, which will have a mounted general and a few other figures. After that, I have a unit of mounted cavalry and a unit of dismounted cavalry to paint. Then I've got to do the whole thing over again for the Confederate side. Then I'll finally have enough to play a small test game with. Then I just need to arrange a time to play with the one other person I know who is interested in historical gaming.

It's pretty discouraging to look at how much I still have left to do before I can even get to playing a game. I'm really excited about the idea of gaming in this period, but it's hard to keep the enthusiasm up when it seems so far off.

But I'll continue posting pictures of my progress, and hopefully I'll eventually be able to post pictures of these guys in action!
