Marx toys had a number of play sets: the Alamo and Fort Apache. I had them both in 1955. However the first set my parents gave me was the Rex Mars Tom Corbett Space Cadet. The coolest part was the little clear plastic helmets you could pop on the space men (and space women!) as you ventured into the vacuum of space! See here for my retrospective which creates a wargame from this great old toy~~.

Hey! I had that as a kid. It wasn't called Tom Corbett when I got it. Darn near put my eye out with the plastic rocket that launched. And he "flying saucer" would hit the ceiling when it was launched. Ah, the good old days.

Very cool. I demanded to know why my parents never gave me a Marx Tom Corbett Space Cadet playset. Dad responded that he never heard of it, but noted that they have just posted a package of homemade fudge. So they are officially forgiven.

Can't wait to see it. The blog won't load for me at the moment.

Alas I was in the same boat as mweaver never receiving that set. I did have the Fort Apache and one Christmas I got 2 Army fort sets. I also lobbied for the Alamo set but no luck. I recently saw the Tom Corbett set in mint condition, the bidding was over $700 USD at that point.

I remember seeing the set as a kid -- my lucky uncle (who is my age) had the Fort Apache set. My house was more into Major Matt Mason, though…

ditto on the fort apache but since I was born in 1961 the Tom Corbert set was probably was opp I did have the cool davy crockett/daniel boone type wooded block fort set as well, my cousin has the old cape canveral and fort apache sets under his bed at my aunt's house I might have to make an excuse for an overnight stay soon LOL

I had the ACW set & also the Fort Apache set which was a disappointment since the defenders were Davy Crocket types-no cavalrymen.I always wanted an Alamo set.

I had the big American civil war set when I was a kid, and absolutely loved it.

I love those old Marx sets. As a kid I had the Iwo Jima and the Battleground sets, but I never had any of those other ones. I never even saw them until recently. I have been buying the Marx military accessories and posting photos of them on my blog.

The accessories are the best part of those playsets. The guns, the furniture, the tools and equipment are all wonderful.
